Update!

UPDATE:

When I used the Windows 8 x64 disk from MSDN to do the install on this oem laptop (as opposed to an AiO disk) - the install auto detected the key (I never had to enter one) and auto activated upon installation.

And this was with a different hard drive than the one that came with the laptop!

So - if you already KNOW the version that came on the machine - then using the official MSDN disk for that specific version looks like it does everything automatically!

The RWeverything only works for finding the key on systems that came pre-installed with windows 8 and have the key stored in the UEFI Bios. Other systems will not have a MSDM section in their ACPI.

Yes, I will confirm this is how this works. The key is burned right into the board. If you reinstall using any media (retail, Technet or MSDN), it will simply NOT ask you for your key, instead it uses the burned in key and should just install with NO key prompt and should automatically activate once it connects to Internet. I just did this today with an Acer computer at work with a copy of my MSDN Windows 8 media.
