Before the wife really throws the pc at me

One of the things about Windows 8 and navigation is that it's so easy, it's confusing. When you see a whole screen of tiles or within an app and you don't see anything obvious to show you what to hit, yes it get's frustrating and it's confusing. But when you use it for a bit and learn that you have to go outside the "box" to navigate around, it becomes easy.

Win8 has all of the issues that any previous Windows versions had... We need to be familiar with the OS before we expect our families to adopt it so we can walk them through it a little (IMHO).

If the navigation were so easy, you wouldn't have to hunt around to find it. Its simply different and you have to learn where to look. Whether its better, is up to the end user....and irrelevant really as the changes are being forced.

That's what I mean, navigation is literally very simple in 8, but it's not obviously clear, which makes it confusing. Once you are shown what to do,it's easy.

And no, no one other than you, yourself, is forcing the changes on you.

I took another spare laptop into work yesterday to let a few people have a play with Win8, didn't know some of the women could swear so much, overall concensus of the 20 people who had a play was "What the F**K"

Please can someone help before the neigbours start to complain about the screaming.

You cannot expect anyone who has never looked at Windows 8 to simply open it and then start using it. Yes, it certainly is different and it's like anything else that's new. Spend a little time to learn how to use it and then you might like it.

Sure they are. They aren't giving me the option to change it back to the way it was. They don't let me disable the start screen. They don't by default give me a start menu button. While I can stay on Windows 7, and plan to, there are features of Windows 8 I have to give up because of my dislike for the interface.

There you go, Microsoft gives you another choice of OS to use that'll be supported for a decade. Some of the new changes to 8 can be used on 7 with some third party tools and using sleep/hibernate instead of shutting down. Windows 7 doesn't have an options to make it look like vista, or like xp. It does let you make it look like Windows 2000.

Choice is there. It's like demanding new features and using the new product but saying the company is forcing you to use it even though they haven't met your demands and the previous version of the product meets your needs. No one is really forcing anything.

Sure, I can continue to use Windows 7 and I plan to. But for fancy features like continuously-available file-share storage, remote hyper-v management that works right out of the box, etc are not being offered or backported to Windows 7. I went to an MS conference today and it's pretty clear in many respects that they are expecting enterprise admins to move to Windows 8 and Server 2012...however very few in attendance had much good to say about the new UI or the experience of using it. It's a real shame, would have been very easy to make the rest of us happy. I can probably handle the new UI on my servers, because I rarely ever use their GUI's...but my desktop....that might be asking a bit too much. But that's what my VM's are for, I'll run a VM of 8 for those things that need 8.

There you go, Microsoft gives you another choice of OS to use that'll be supported for a decade.
And so it should be supported, considering I paid $400 for retail version. And in particular by giving us the improvements in W8 to W7 via SP2.

And why won't they do that? Because it would spoil their W8 fire sale promotion for touchphone/tablet. They're relying on the public rolling over and saying: " Oh well that's the way it's going to be, so we might as well get used to it."

Thanks for the support M$? Yeah, in your dreams! :(

But then again, in 6 months time, once they've achieved the desired market promotional goals in Tablet/Smartfone, they could be feted as our "saviour and hero" by giving us the SP2 improvements for W7! How nice of them! That would be a win-win all round! ... especially for M$!

Or wonder of wonders, maybe even a Start Menu/Orb and bypass Metro in W8 so I don't have to give Stardock $5? Hell, M$ are killing us with kndness .... and we thought they were just a money making machine!
