Advance Notification October 14th 2014 Security Bulletin

Today, we provide advance notification for the release of nine Security Bulletins. Three of these updates are rated Critical, five are rated as Important, and one is rated Moderate in severity. These updates are for Microsoft Windows, Internet Explorer, Office, .NET Framework, and ASP.NET.

As per our usual process, we’ve scheduled the Security Bulletin release for the second Tuesday of the month, October 14, 2014, at approximately 10 a.m. PDT. Revisit this blog then for analysis of the relative impact, as well as deployment guidance, together with a brief video overview of the month’s updates. Until then, please review the ANS summary page for more information to help you prepare for Security Bulletin testing and deployment.

As a reminder, we are now using a new format for our Security Bulletin Webcast, scheduled on Wednesday, October 15, at 11 a.m. PDT. You are no longer required to register, download the Live Meeting client, or dial in to a separate number. A link to the Webcast will be included in our blog next Tuesday.

You can follow us on Twitter at @MSFTSecResponse.

Thank you,

I had a Bing Search Bar added to the top of my New Tabs screen in IE. I went into manage add-ons and under Search Providers, I added Google and deleted Bing. Now it's gone? And good riddance.

What it did for me was make Bing search the default whereas I had Google search set as default before the updates. Changes like that without my consent are pushing it a little. :busted:

I'm getting quit annoyed at having Bing shoved down my throat.

No BING bar for me, I guess I got lucky.

I had to uninstall the optional update KB 2995388 as it does not play nice with VMware Player and my virtual machines. My solution appears to work for others and hopefully M$ will fix this error so I can reinstall this update

I see from your other post that there is a fix by changing the VM config.ini. Are you going to reinstall the update again?

As who fixes it, well that's depends on who created the error. It could have been MS, but it could be the code in VMWare wasn't quite compliant and they'll patch it.

Who knows?

I tried editing the VM config ini. file but it did not work for me as I stated in post #5 of my original thread but it is good that there may be more than one possible solution for others using a Virtual machine.

Also thank god this was only an optional update and not an important one.

Yeah, no Bing Bar here either. Maybe if you already had it but it was disabled, it reactivated it. MS does on occasion put Bing Bar in some third party installs just like Google and Adobe have for years, but I've never seen them do it in an update.

This one is one I have never seen before, and I know it was not there before doing the Windows updates. I just wish I would have taken a screen shot. When I open a new tab, it goes to the New Tab Page that lists frequent sites I've visited. This new Bing Bar was not up at the top where most search bars etc are. It was just above the two rows of tiles showing the web sites I've visited. I haven't run windows update on my other desktop PC yet so I'll see if I can get a screen shot on that PC. This install isn't that old so Bing was likely the default and only search engine installed. I just hadn't got around to swapping in Google. My guess if you already removed Bing you may not get this extra search bar. As soon as I removed Bing and added Google in manage add-ons it was gone.

Who knows?

Vmware is releasing a New version of both workstation and player in middle of November.

I can't say I have any issues at all with Windows 8.1 and the current version of vmware -- although I'm running on a LINUX host and I usually use "Unity" mode.

No Bing bar for me either. Here's IE on a Linux desktop (again use "Unity Mode") with standard Google (UK) search - No BING anywhere to be seen.

Cheers

What do you get when you open a new tab

The new search bar is not on the first tab that opens when you start IE, it only appears when you add a tab (if the default is to open tabs as 'the new tab page'

Whenever I try to search something through the Bing Search on the New Tabs section, it always lets me type in the search box at the top of the screen. I don't know if that's a problem, or if it's supposed to do that.

I sometimes use Chrome on my Windows 7 Laptop. But, ever since I got IE fixed, there's really no need for it anymore. Plus, Chrome seems slower than IE now anyways.

Downloaded and installed all updates (after checking their purpose) and this looked like easiest one to date. It didn't change anything I can see, even IE stayed exactly as I had it, no Bing no bars etc. Opening page and new tabs all started up with Google and so did search.

If you don't use the address bar for searching, the option to disable this new search box is here, remove tick from search in address bar and search box on the new tab page (or change default search engine to something other than Bing)
