There is absolutely nothing in any of the "quick-start" papers or online manual for this model (HP 15-f027ca Notebook, fwiw) that mentions ANYTHING about charging the battery, etc. It's all based on what to do AFTER the machine is powered up. Very odd for HP to leave out such important info...

System Restore seems to have fixed it for me at this point. I'm still holding off judgment until it's been a few hours with no problems. I forgot to turn off Windows Update beforehand, so they all got reinstalled automatically. However, nothing has gone bad yet, so perhaps the restore fixed...

I will most likely try a system restore next. My job depends on this machine, and it needs to be working properly ASAP. I'll let you know!

Solved. It was my security suite (Outpost). Apparently it doesn't play well with Windows 8.1. I had to uninstall it, everything's okay now.
