Windows 8.1 refuses to sleep

I hope you're right but I still think its way to soon to declare a total victory

Just tested mine.
Set it for 1 minute.
Took around 2 for it to sleep.

Why some sleep & some do not is a mystery. :(

Take this with the tiniest grain of salt ever, but my install of Win10 ("beta") to a 64-bit VMware Workstation machine did not sleep appropriately. In fact, of about 10 tries the system only slept once. But the reason I say take it with a grain of salt is that, as anyone who has used Workstation knows, there are lots of inherent issues and problems running on an OS in Workstation which are not issues when using actual hardware. I don't have plans to install Win10 directly to hardware until it's an official release. (I'm not taking my main computer down to do it and don't have any other hardware new enough to bother with.)

As an aside, my initial thoughts of Win10 are generally positive. I LOVE the new start menu, maybe even better than Win7. MAYBE. The only problem is it didn't keep up very well when I'd hit the <windows> key and start typing a program to run. Booting into Windows was quite a bit slower than with Win8.1 too. But, both these issues could be due to the fact this is beta (with additional beta code running for logging/etc purposes) and also in a virtual environment. I've never installed Win8/8.1 final in a virtual environment, so I have no base with which to compare.

Yeah, basically, why even bother with this post in the first place?! /sigh

BTW, I wonder if the site admins here have a new tenforums.com URL yet?

Windows 10 Forums or the link at the bottom of every 7F/8f page.

I'm thinking of trying Win 10, but this is an HP machine and if I did install it, I'd want to dual boot. Can I do that with UEFI?

Some are reporting that dual boot is running great. Perhaps you might want to present your question there.

Dual Boot Win7 & Win10

So far there is no dual booting tutorial, but there is a fresh install one:

The solution is to ditch Win8.1.

This is in no way a "solution" to the Windows 8.1 problem.

It is for me. The time Lin and Wyn and NCguy and I have spent in trying different things... I even managed to accidentally delete ALL of my three drives partitions, the worst crash I have had in the 20 years of building and owning PCs (I had complete and offsite backups so no harm/no foul). I am not spending any more time on this issue expect for typing here, heh. It is the only permanent solution for me, no more workarounds needed. One thousand, eight hundred, and sixty nine posts, amazing.

Getting close to my last post here. I have already moved to the new tenforums site and am filling in the profile now. See you on the flip side!

Right, my over 8.1 win 10 install is 22 hrs old and it is going very well. Running with MS account and it has not failed to sleep once!!

Certainly seems to have fixed sleep for me, even though all my progs and data are still as per 8.1.

Yep, John, I am over it and I beat you to the 'other side' by about 45 min!

Good luck to all. Hope I don't have a sleep relapse and have to eat my words!

Cheers,

Lindsay.

And neither can I, Hippsie! I found it, cut and pasted the part I needed, but no longer have the URL to it!

If you want the instructions I cut and pasted, PM me with an email and I'll attach the Office 2013 document to an email for you.

Maybe with what's left of it, you can figure out where I got it from. I'm pretty positive it came from Eight Forums.

The little furry one would probably enjoy your nuts, Wyn!!

Nah, he'd rather tease KittyPaws and PipSqueak.

He won't be too safe from PipSqueak for long, though, since I caught him (at approximately three months old) on top of the privacy fence the other day.

KittyPaws is too much of a glutton and is too fat to jump that far any more.
