Microsoft says Google trying to undermine Windows Phone

Last edited by a moderator:
Holy crap.

By relevance, I'm talking about open sourced Linux software being coded for Windows; which depends on the developer. And no, it's not used largely enough other than android, which is a variant of Linux as well as ios and mac os. But the overwhelming majority of desktops and laptops are not running Linux, therefore it's not very relevant in that space other than mobile and server platforms.

Talk about getting off topic... Linux fanboys on the attack! ;)

Me off topic You are the one off topic this is about Windows Phone.

Well let me bring this back to topic:

Google does some nasty things, I agree with the article.
The MS YouTube APP wasn't treated nicely.

Coke,

Your lack of understanding that Linux software is globally used is hilarious. Tons of mail servers run sendmail, zillions of dns servers run BIND, and the majority of web servers are running Apache. And I haven't even mentioned all of the database servers running mysql.

On the desktop, Linux has never excelled, but in the server room,.it's quietly running a ton of the backend infrastructure.

Tell me, what operating system(s) is/are used overwhelmingly by everyone else that isn't managing websites, email servers, or databases? Yeah, it's not Linux. This is what I'm speaking about, I'm not discussing Linux in the server realm as that has little relevance here.

I know, that's why I said Linux has not excelled on the desktop.

but you can watch YouTube on any browser on any platform inc. MS phone, right? there is no need to develop an app. when I open a YouTube video on my android phone it asks me if I want to watch it on the YouTube app, or on the regular browser... and both give me the same result. Assuming the MS browser works too, I don't see the big deal not having a specific app. YouTube wasn't intended to be an app application, it is a cloud-service supposed to work in any browser, which it does. Unless I'm mistaken and Google somehow manage to disable YouTube videos on regular browsers on MS platforms.

That's not the point. If consumers want to jump ship from iOS and Android they are going to want to run the same Apps, they are going to want a You Tube app like they had on the other platform. Based on your logic why does Google have any apps at all? All their services are web based anyways, they should just tell their Android users to use their browser.

They never rammed IE down anyone's throat, they included IE with Windows but never blocked the installation of competing browsers. I guess Apple is ramming Safari down everyone's throat, and Goggle is as well with Chrome?

Also you commented earlier in the thread that MS doesn't develops Apps for Android, how about the Skydrive app? Smartglass? Several Live games where they will be offering achievements, if they haven't already, which was going to be WP exclusive feature. They announced Office was coming for Android in 2013, One Note is already available as is Lync.

Microsoft got raked over the coals for doing the same thing Apple and Google have been doing for years.

Yeah, this whole shoving IE down peoples throats is a complete and utter farce.

People have always had the choice from day one if they didn't want IE, they went and downloaded Netscape,, man was them some war days.

Then the browser wars started. And you had Opera, Mozilla, Firefox, a whole bunch of others. You were never rejected/blocked to installing any of them.

People just didn't like that IE was starting to get integrated into the whole OS, and that there would be a point where those other browsers just might become obsolete. It had nothing to do at all with competition.

This is what Google is doing now. Rather than compete on having a better device with a better experience, they want to block any potential to a better experience on a site they purchased (didn't create) that is extremely popular to a company they don't like, but allow other companies to benefit, that is Corporate Tyranny, bascially is is unfair competition practices.

Much like, people complain that they can't get Linux from Dell,,, well hey guess what, you can't get Mac for your shiny new built Dell PC either. Don't hear anyone bithcing about that.

IE didn't follow standards, everything was written for IE because it is what everybody had in common. Until other browsers caught on and customers demanded better interoperability did MS focus on compliance with standards.

That's why some if us have a beef with IE.

There was a time that you couldn't download MS Updates from the website, UNLESS you used IE (or spoofed the browser User Agent).

Here is what you see (now) if you go to Windows Update using XP + FF

Note:
I'm not saying that you couldn't download the individual updates, from the KB, using the browser of your choice.

Much like, people complain that they can't get Linux from Dell,,, well hey guess what, you can't get Mac for your shiny new built Dell PC either. Don't hear anyone bithcing about that.

While Dell not offering Linux for the Desktop, they've been supplying their servers with Red Hat Enterprise since like '98(we've ordered several over the years, our accounting package runs on RHEL):

Red Hat - OS and Applications - Wiki - OS and Applications - Dell Community

And to be more on-topic, I definitely agree that if Google is going to have their API open on Android & iOS, they should allow the same access on WP.

We've got several Android phones (I use a Galaxy S3, best phone I've ever had), a couple iPhones, and one Windows Phone, and one thing the WP we have lacks (Nokia Lumia 822 anyway) is a notification LED. Who designs a phone without a notification LED?? Our general manage has the phone, and she was told by Verizon it was designed that way on purpose, since 'most smart phone users look at their phone screen every few minutes anyway, so it's a redundant feature', lol.

None of that was my point. I wasn't at all referring to Servers. I mean really? Come on, that wasn't that hard to deduce was it? Really?

My point was clear in it's meaning.

Notification LED = an LED light that flashes when you have a missed call or VM.

Ohh!! Windows Phones don't have one of those because they aren't running a dated UI model where the lock screen only tells you your recent texts, time, and slide to unlock. On Windows Phone lock screens, you can have five different things to notify SPECIFICALLY on what you missed, as well as having an app provide further information, like who texted you, what is your recent email and who sent it, your calendar appointments, among potentially MANY other things.

Actually, My Arrive has an LED that flashes green when I miss calls. Only for calls though.
Red for when the battery is about to die.

But yeah,, the LED could be considered obsolete, however, if it is sitting across the room and I don't want to go get it and I can see it,, like when it's charging, that LED does come in handy.

Thinking about that, I think HTC Windows Phone MIGHT have something of that. I know their Windows Phone 7's did, not sure about the 8X though. I don't really see a point in having the LED when the software can do a better job of that. Like a nice lock screen... :)

I live by my LED notification light on my Samsung Galaxy S3. I don't want to waste battery life lighting up the screen when a little blinkey light will let me know when I have something that has arrived.

Then you ultimately waste battery life lighting up the screen when a blinky light is taking nominal amounts of battery power. I live by notification sounds if I have anything new that is received.

Audio notifications eat up more power (about 150 time more) than a blinking led.

Yet my battery never has died from that... :)

Well, of course. But if my light is blinking to let me know that I have an email, then I am going to turn on the screen anyway to read that email. So, I don't actually see the point you are attempting to make. However, if I look across the room and my phone is not blinking, then I don't have to get up and check on it. Thus saving me from having to turn on the screen to see if anything new has arrived.

Sound notifications are almost pointless in my house with my kids, my dog, my wife, my tv going, the stereo running or watching a movie.
