Because if that's the case than it likely has nothing to do with any driver. If I disconnect from wifi, it goes to sleep. If I disconnect from wifi but has usb tethering to my phone's data plan, then it'll still stay awake. So for me it's more about having an active internet connection than any particular driver. BTW my system has complete clean install with no programs.
If that's true, you should ensure wireless driver is updated to latest, router firmware is updated to latest, and then try to figure out what you installed or are using that is not working so well in regards to networking, especially in regards to any VM or security software.

I'm now having exactly the same problems as my main computer with Windows 8.1 on it. It is certainly an interesting quirk. After a lot of trial and error today, it seems that running the computer for about 3 to 4 hours constant will cause it to stop sleeping. Unplugging the ethernet cable (or just disabling the network) will allow the computer to resume sleep again. Plugging the cable back in (or enabling the network) prevents the computer from sleeping. Could this be a driver issue? If so, I'm not sure what to do, as I've got the most recent driver from the manufacturer, and it doesn't look like they are updating it any time soon (the last update was in 2011). Also, it's difficult to assume that it is a driver issue when this same observation is made on all four of the computers in our house, each with completely different hardware which ranges from as old as 7 years ago to as recent as last year.

I apologize profusely for getting everyone's hopes up, including mine. Maybe this will teach me to not jump to conclusions and be more patient with testing. Sorry again.
are you sure it completely refused to sleep? Because there was an instance for me where it was Windows Update running in the background preventing it from sleeping. In either scenario where sleep works or where it definitely doesn't work, I've found that sleep doesn't follow the timer that closely in Win 8.1.
Btw, in your case with 3-4 hrs running constantly did the comp ever enter hibernation? Cuz that's what causes my comp to start insomnia. As long as I stay away from hibernate it sleeps fine. But when the problem appears disconnecting from the internet fixes mine as well.
Based on the Event Log, there is no indication that the computer ever initiated a sleep event during the 3-4 hours that it was constantly awake. I do not have hibernate enabled, so it did not enter hibernation. It is a very interesting quirk in that after a reboot, I can adjust the sleep timer from as little as 1 minute to as much as 3 hours and the computer will sleep just fine. However, if I set the timer to 4 hours, or a more likely scenario is that I have used the computer for 3 to 4 hours and then set a sleep timer for 1 minute, then the computer will no longer sleep. There is a bug that comes up after several hours of use which affects the sleep timer. I have observed this same occurrence on four different computers with very different hardware and software installed.

Yes, as soon as the network is disabled (whether it be disabled through windows, or simply unplug the ethernet cable), the sleep timer works perfectly again. Plug the cable back in, or enable the network connection, and the sleep timer doesn't work. Enabling and/or disabling the check box for allowing the network adapter to wake the computer in the device manager has no impact. I wonder what could be happening at the network connection that would prevent sleep.

I have had issues with the event log. Until a recent Windows update my pc would enter sleep and it wasn't being logged. I have found the event viewer to be very unreliable with regard to sleep. I know, big surprise.

Large update today from MS. I looked through the list but the KB knowledge base answers are pretty vague. Still, keep your fingers crossed!

I downloaded and installed today's updates. I turned Network Discovery back on and the PC went to sleep on scheduled time. Let's see if it sticks.

I'll be watching, John. Not installing 8.1 until I can be sure the sleep problem is solved (for the most part), since Win 8 is working pretty well for me at the moment.

It would be just like Microsoft to fix the problem without telling us they did.

Doesn't sound too promising if you're troubled devices aren't wireless.

Well, it fixed my desktop. I couldn't sleep before in 8.1 while joined to a home group. Now I can. AND the timer is accurate for sleep as well. You just have to add your time to sleep to the time til monitor off for total sleep time. I tested this every time I increased the sleep time and it was always within 20 seconds of scheduled total time to sleep. (20 seconds to write to ram). So far so good.

That's great but keep in mind most update fixes for this have only shown to be effective for the first few days. That said, let's hope this one's different but I doubt it will hold.
