Windows 8.1 refuses to sleep

  1. #391

Interestingly, my netbook, playing a YT clip, with Power svc on, turns off the screen/video but the sound continues (no sleep).

With Power svc off, the vid plays normally.

Reinforces the random chaotic state of 8.1 sleep mode.

Actually, this is more than a 'oh dear, naughty MS' moment as the netbook drives the TV for Internet access. Obviously I will have to stop the Power svc here as well. Not happy.

Pity I didn't wait to upgrade to 8.1.

You should grab your hand on an ISO of Win 8.1 and make a fresh install. The store update is full of bugs!

Will need to bone up on how to get it and get it activated. Bit of a drag re-installing everything but may be a good choice.

Orbit, now that sleep timer is working pretty much as it should, I decided to pass on doing a clean install until maybe after the iso solution becomes available directly through MSFT.

It's strange you guys keep having some problems, even with the SkyDrive option we found.

I just want to mention that I don't see the same problems you guys still are having. I watched a movie yesterday through an App, and my PC and Screen stayed on the whole time. And after the movie was done and I quiet the App, my screen turned off after about 10 minutes and the PC went to sleep after 30 minutes. I even don't have a delay when it goes to sleep mode. I hear my hard disk working for a few seconds and then it's off to sleep.

Could it be you guys haven't returned some settings to their original positions? Else I don't know why my PC and even my Laptop are working as they should and yours don't.

For a brighter note, Microsoft in The Netherlands contacted me through Facebook and asked me for my phone number so they could contact me about this problem. I send them a PM with some explanation about what we had discovered and the solution that seems to work for me, but not for everyone yet. I also gave them a link to this topic, so maybe they will check here first before they will contact me in person.

At last, someone at Microsoft is finally taking notice of this problem. Now we can only hope, their programmers will eventually find the error and fix it.

While I was typing this on my Laptop, my other PC went to sleep on time. I left it alone about 30 minutes ago. And it acted like I said. I could hear some activity on the hard disk for about 5 seconds, and then it went to sleep.

Oh, I just thought about something I did, which you guys probably didn't.

I did a full reset of my registry after I had found that disabling Power service helped me as well.

I used the tool 'subinacl' for this that I downloaded from the Microsoft website. After installing it, I ran following batch file:

    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f

Maybe it changed some settings that are still giving you guys some troubles? Just a thought.

And, I also constantly have iolo System Mechanic Pro running on my systems. Since Windows Vista, it is keeping all my Windows versions running smoothly. I started using it after my Vista was getting so slow that I thought I needed to do a full install again, but a friend from the UK told me about this program and it fixed my Vista without the need of a full install and it has kept all my systems running smoothly. It always feels as if I'm working with a freshly installed Windows. (CCleaner also does a great job, but iolo's license is for all your PC's and not limited to 1 or 3, and does a lot more as well.)

I think those things are probably the only things that could be different between my systems and all of yours.

Good to know that MS are interested, Rudy. Well done pointing them to this thread.

Also good to hear that yours is only taking a very few seconds to 'slam dunk'. Any delay is a pointer to the problem not really being fixed.

subinacl just sets access rights so could only have an influence if some setting needed a lower security setting to allow a change. Of course, if that was the case, then a registry setting that wasn't being changed could explain differences between machines. I'll run that batch file - can't do any harm (I hope!!).

My computers all run well as I have been into computers, professionally and recreationally for 38 years! But this one has me stumped as I don't have the tools or deep knowledge to do a proper diagnosis. When one considers how many interacting variables there are it is not surprising these things are hard to crack! I've been through all the services adding a few at a time to see if I could get a result. The only one that made a real difference was the Power svc.

Let's hope for some help soon.

    Cheers,

    Lindsay.

To make it even safer, you could always export your Registry to a file first. If something goes horribly wrong, you can still import this backup and fix your system.

However, I don't think something will go wrong. I ran it on both my desktop and laptop, and both of them are working fine.

Even when my laptop should be too old for Windows 8.1, it's still working nicely with it, although, I did install the 32-bit on it instead of the 64-bit. It only has 2GB of RAM, so I didn't really need the 64-bit version for it. Well, it originally had Vista installed on it back in the day and Windows 8 is less resource hungry than Vista. The only driver I use that's still made for Vista, is the driver for my graphical card. But it works, so I'm happy.

I have been playing/working with computers for about 30 years now. Starting with the famous Commodore 64 and the TRS-80 Color Computer from Tandy. And then I switched to an IBM Clone with DOS and I think a very early version of Windows. I'm not even sure if it had a windows version when I started working with PCs.

After school, I started working in a shop as a computer technician there, and ended up to be the head technician after a few months. After this, I have been self-employed for a few years, running my own webshop and also still doing some PC repairs.

And, over the years, I have been programming stuff for fun as well. Starting with Basic , then moving on to Turbo Pascal and C++. These days, I mostly work with PHP for making websites. I'm not so good in webdesign, but I know how to code.

I'm not completely up to date with the newest hardware developments, but I did keep track of all the Windows versions. I still have friends who call on me whenever they get into trouble with their PCs. And as you probably know, most PC troubles are caused by software problems. Hardware these days is pretty reliable, if you take care of it.

Rudy, I never fooled with anything but the hybrid sleep (turned it off) and Power Service (turned it off). I turned both back on before disabling SkyDrive.

Very good news about Microsoft being interested. So, now we have my tech at HP (hopefully) and someone from Microsoft interested. We'll take all the help we can get!

There are too many posts to read; and I have had my new Windows 8.1 Pro Desktop PC will not sleep problem, in that the PC wakes up as soon as it goes to sleep. In a cycle.

I figured it out to be two problems for me.

    1) When I switch the Monitor off, it must send a signal, as the PC wakes up if I touch the monitor `Off button` after sending the PC to sleep.

    2) I have a lazer mouse, and even picking it up to turn it off will start the PC back up again; but I don`t want to drain the battery all night with the lazer on, waiting, for a movement to re-start.

I guess I will have to look into mouse settings again to find a fix. Or just shut down every time. Being as with windows 8, a shutdown is not exactly a shutdown.

Scuse me for butting in and/or being out of context, if I am.

Aha! I knew there was something familiar about you! I've been working with computers since around 1979-1980ish. My first one was a Color Computer too. I bought it for my daughter, but she abandoned it and I loved it. Like you I moved on up to a clone. Some time between 1980 and 1985, I built my first system at HAL-PC and haven't looked back since! This HP is my first store-bought besides HP laptops since then.
