Windows 8 Keeps Gaining Users As the 8.1 Launch Nears

Windows 8 continues to be the fourth top operating system in the world, but the latest figures indicate that Microsoft’s modern operating system keeps growing every day.

Statistics provided by StatCounter for the month of August show that so far Windows 8 has only managed to get closer to Mac OS X, but if the same pace is maintained, it should overtake Apple’s platform in the coming weeks.
Windows 8 Keeps Gaining Users As the 8.1 Launch Nears

Both of my laptops I have upgraded to 8 from 7. The wife's laptop runs 7. And my two desktops will always run XP Pro. I have them both acronis'ed with SP3 and running great. I like the way 8 looks and feels, so its fun to play with. If I have something serious to do and don't want my OS asking me stupid questions and second guessing what I'm doing, XP is for me. I had my Thinkpads running downgraded XP, before I went to 8. For general surfing and FB... I like the 8. Is it faster? No. More stable? No.about the same. Happy either way.

I've tried a few distros

Would love to try Windows 8.1 but I'm nervous I will lose all my apps. I'm new to Windows, having used Linux in my high-school. Is it worth the jump to 8.1?

If you know how to use Linux, then there probably isn't much point swapping to W8.

Even if want to run "Windows Only" software, you could use a VM manager program to run it (e.g. VMware Player).

My high-school science teacher chose Arch as the class distro so needless to say it was sink or swim haha, but I've since moved on to Gentoo.

I don't know anything about Gentoo.
My housemate uses Arch (he's used it for many years now).

I've tried:
  • CentOS
  • Deepin
  • Fedora
  • Linux Mint MATE
  • OpenSUSE
  • Pinguy
  • Ubuntu (I had 10.04 installed for nearly 3 years)
I have Linux Mint 14 MATE (64 bit) installed alongside XP & W7.

Wine does a pretty good job, there.

I've read a few complaints about WINE not working properly with some Windows software.

Oh, it doesn't work 100% of the time, but what does? I figure if I want 100% of my Windows programs to work, I should be deploying them in Windows. ;)

VMs are handy

When I'm using Linux, I use Windows VMs if I need to run Windows software (e.g. my old games).

I also use them, if I need to run some software that I don't want to install on my physical Windows install (e.g. Java).

...which is exactly what VM is meant for. I just never cared for using those, is all. Back when XP still ruled, we used to have a piece of equipment at work which would only run properly if we used it in a VM environment on Win 95. Talk about feeling like "Take one giant step backward"....
