Windows 8 Keeps Gaining Users As the 8.1 Launch Nears

Windows 8 continues to be the fourth top operating system in the world, but the latest figures indicate that Microsoft’s modern operating system keeps growing every day.

Statistics provided by StatCounter for the month of August show that so far Windows 8 has only managed to get closer to Mac OS X, but if the same pace is maintained, it should overtake Apple’s platform in the coming weeks.

It's TRUE, MdMd, MANY people are interested in it - They will LOOK. Then they will RUN!

Funny! If they run, they must be scared!

BTW, much of the so-called jarring animation can be turned off.
... and the start screen flipping can be disabled.

No doubt, Microsoft is taking a gamble, here. XP has an awful lot of fiercely loyal fans, with good reason. Time will tell if their gamble will pay off. They no longer have such a lock on the market as they did back in 1995. But personally, I like 8, and I'm looking forward to the update.

I can't say as I h8t or g8t it. I use it on my laptop but see no point in upgrading my desktop from Windows 7. I am looking forward to the updates in 8.1 though. I won't be impressed if I suffer the same issues I have with the preview though.

Hi DJ,

It will be a good new OS, and Google has partnered with Hatachi and matter of fact this new CR Book will be the 1st time any hardware builder and designer to use super conductor technology :)

Will be super fast!!! And run ice cold at maximum use/operation

Microsoft wake up! And Stop Screwing Us with your windows 8 garbage and Smartphone crap,,, leave the Smartphone market alone and let Apple and Samsung do their thing in that area ...

I am using Win8 on my computers, don't have any major problems with it, looking forward to 8.1. It's not perfect but is customizable as all Windows versions have been. Considering the options I'll stick with Windows.

Have a WP8 phone and think it's a refreshing change to other smartphones, competition is a good thing.
Don't understand why MS wouldn't get into this market.

Choice is a good thing, choose the OS and smartphone you prefer and let others do the same.

I like the idea of a chromebook, but not sure if I could use it as my main device

here in the UK there is a high percentage of people who do not have fast enough broadband for an on line device like this, so the speed of it would be terrible

nice idea, but not to practical, I want to store my data locally not rely on the internet

*unless chromebooks have changed since I last looked, then ignore the above

If you're using Linux NOW, yes, you'll lost the majority of your apps. If you mean you've recently adopted W7 or W8 and are concerned that 8.1 will kill your apps, don't be. I have yet to see an app that runs in 7 but won't in 8, and 8.1 won't change that.

It is true that Google geared Chrome toward cloud use, but I'm sure there will be a call for (and they'll listen) local storage... and local apps, to some extent. Interesting to watch this develop. I wanted to get my hands on a copy of Chrome OS, but they only have the open-source "Chromium" code out there, for the developers... which I'm not.

I agree, it is interesting to see how it goes

I tried a few months ago to see if I could work purely in googles cloud, already use for email but starting using their documents as well, it did work very well, but I found the speed slow compared to doing things off line

The way it works on a traditional computer/cloud works best for me, documents are stores locally, but synced up to the cloud for if I need them while not at home

Chrome device is something I would still like to get at some point, but for my use it would more than likely replace my tablet and not my PC

If you know how to use Linux, then there probably isn't much point swapping to W8.

Even if you want to run "Windows Only" software, you could use a VM manager program to run it (e.g. VMware Player).

...and there, I think you've hit on something fundamental. In a spectrum of devices ranging from PCs to laptops to tablets to smartphones, ChromeBook is aimed squarely at the middle... a cross-platform device that blends the best of all worlds, one which could draw folks from both ends. And that revolution is EXACTLY what MS was hoping W8 could become the heart of. The gauntlet has been thrown down!

I encourage anybody who is not sure about 8, to use 8, and stick with it, it is very good. 8.1 goes a bit over the precipice, and it seems like they are shoving it at us as a "solution" for Windows 8. -And Windows 8 doesn't need a solution. It could use a service pack, but it's great how it is.

I agree wholeheartedly with you, I've gotten to like W8 quite well. The main thing I'm looking forward to is the additional customization, and maybe a few stability patches.

Well, I haven't looked back. 8.1 RTM is delicious across my pc and Surface Pro. Same wallpapers and icons perfectly synced. Apps in 50/50 or whatever size I want is certainly also nice.

But don't take my word for it. Keep using several other os's. I'll use my one for everything.
