Windows 8 Enterprise RTM Free Evaluation available for anyone

It looks like MS has made a 90 day eval release of Windows 8 Enterprise that you can download and install right now even without a technet or MSDN or other for pay account. (Though you may need to sign up for a live account to get it).

Read more here:
Download Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation

P.s. I have not gone through the process of getting this version, so if there are any hiccoughs, post back here about it.

If it's a streaming app, then yes, a lot of enterprise IT managers are going to want to stop it. Streaming apps tend to consume a lot of network bandwidth: a couple thousand employees all tuning in to live streaming media all day will consume bandwidth intended for business use, not personal use. Most places likely have some sort of internet use policy that states something to the effect of "business use only."

You can buy an MP3 player or radio and enjoy that. :D

Actually the way I read it they are saying that business employees shouldn't be listening to music while working. Thing is though, there were plenty of other Music/Web Radio Apps listed. Slacker Radio wasn't listed at all for that PC. It was the only one I was looking for. I have no idea how many more are MIA for Enterprise customers?

It's a little weird that Microsoft is making that decision though... Not a good precedent.

Well there may be a setting where the author can choose which versions of windows a product can be sold to as well I guess. Though not sure why that would be either :)

Yeah, I have no Idea if its Microsoft or Slacker Radio that blocked it, all I know is it's not an option for the Enterprise trial.

I'm very surprised that the trial edition for most consumers is Enterprise. Why didn't MS make Pro the version. The people most likely to trial this are the home consumers. Business consumers will have a Volume License agreement, MSDN or other program they can get the software from to test and evaluate.

Well the trial version was really meant only for developers. BUT uh, yeah I would thing Pro would have been just as good in that case as well.

On top of that with Windows 7 you could trial any version by just leaving the product code field blank. You can't do that with Windows 8, it won't install without entering a product code. I would think that is going to steer anybody wanting a look at the final product to the Enterprise trial.

No, you are right, but I just am surprised that Microsoft didn't just release a Windows 8 Pro trial for everybody to use. Unsure why they decided to use the Enterprise version for this.

I guess they figure the RP is good enough? If you hunt around you can find Product codes to install the Pro RTM. It won't activate so some features are locked out until you do. I don't recommend going that route but not having a trial for a Home version is going to entice some people to try it anyway. I did and it just ended up being a waste of time and effort. That's how it goes though when you don't have access to Technet or MSDN.

Want to know why Slacker Radio wouldn't be available for the note "Developer" version of Enterprise? It's a developer's version not intended for general use to start with! The build is strictly intended for use by IT developers not the consumer. The DP, CP, and RP builds are intended for the general preview.

A guess or you know this for sure? If you can't install an App how are you going to test that it works? The blurb on the download page says it for developers, I didn't see where it specifically said it was a special developer edition. My guess is its because this App uses up bandwidth and may impact productivity. I'm not saying your wrong, it just doesn't make any sense to me. There were a bunch of Apps installed by default along with the App Store App? Unfortunately, Slacker Radio was the only App I tried to download and install, and I've since replaced the Ent trial with Windows 7 on that PC. I can't try any other apps at this time.

When it is states Developer on the page the build is intended for developers to work with. Many wondered why each new leaked build of 7 saw problems while the beta and RC builds didn't simply because the inbetween developer builds got out but were not suitable for the home user desktop as untested builds.

Likewise the same goes for the IT developer version of any service pack. People wondered why they ran into problems when downloading the wrong SP for Windows. Instead of the general release they clicked on the IT version. These whether a service pack or new build number are intended for advanced programmers not for the general consumer lookover.

didnt grab it as they using silly DLM's whats with this download manager fad instead of simple download links?

That's pretty normal for Microsoft when downloading large ISO files, if your download stops for any reason you can resume where it left off without having to start over. Also, DLM often uses multiple threads for better performance. However, you have the option to use the DLM or Web Browser links.

Went to the App store to install Slacker Radio but its not listed. Looks like some Apps are filtered out if you are running the Enterprise Edition.

I'm running Windows 8 Pro RTM (Licensed and activated through MVL site) and there is no Slacker Radio available, I can find it by searching the Store but when I select it I'm told the App is not available so it's not Enterprise specific.

Hi there
if you want a decent radio app (Free) what's wrong with tunein radio - works fine on W8 Enterprise.

works well on Mobile phones too - android and Iphone.

TuneIn: Listen to Online Radio, Music and Talk Stations forget the stupid Ms "App Store" -- I hate that whole concept on a PC -- fine for a phone. !!.

I think you can even install your app manually as well -- forget that "rubbish store".

I can't try Slacker Radio from here as it only works in the US (I can via a proxy but I'm doing something else though).

AFAIK there's no reason to block Enterprise from multimedia apps --what about people who WORK in the industry !!!!.

With W2003 SERVER you could even install Windows Games (the old classic ones like XP) -- why should a SERVER have spider solitaire on it -- same argument --why shouldn't someone play spider while waiting for a lengthy download to complete !!!!.

Cheers
jimbo

I live in Canada eh. The reason I like Slacker is because I can listen to classic rock with no commercials or announcer. Just the music. And its free, for the moment anyway on the RP. Its a moot point for me anyway, as I likely won't be running Windows 8 on any of my PC's. Once I ditch the RP and go back to Windows 7 I won't be listening to it anyway. The fact that it was blocked on the Ent Trial was just an observation I thought I would pass on.

That's got me thinking that the Slacker Radio App might end up being a pay for App when Windows 8 Officially launches.

Nope, can't be the "pay for App" because there are already a number of paid Apps in the store. I thought maybe it was restricted from Canada but I have it on my Windows Phone so that can't be it either. Could just be broken or broken for Canadians.

It works fine for me on the RP, It shows up in the store on this PC. I think I used it on the CP too. It is just MIA on Enterprise trial for me.
At first I though it might have been a region thing as I had not set my time zone or Country. Windows had me in the Pacific US. I set that all up and double checks that my Time and Date was correct. Oh well, its just one of those things that makes you scratch your head and wonder why?

R0bR mentioned it wasn't there in 8 Pro too. It seems to be blocked to any final release build of 8. Maybe its just poor coding in the app itself and will be fixed? I think I tried the WebRadio app but didn't like the stations offered. I wouldn't really call Slacker Radio, radio. I'm listening to it now and there is no announcer or commercials, just the music stream. Every once in a while you'll hear a "Slacker Radio" but that's it. I tried the Web App on my Windows 7 PC and its totally different and cuts out at 10 songs a day. I've listened for hours on this PC. Maybe they customized the app for the preview (to get you hooked) but the final version will be different and isn't up yet. Probably a trial to start and pay to keep using. Just guessing here?
