Windows 8.1 Update 1 is a Mandatory Update for Future Security Update Offerings

Microsoft has now gone ahead and released the KB Article for Windows 8.1 Update 1 ahead of the April 8, 2014 public availability.

You can read the full KB Article (2919355) here: Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 Update April, 2014

However, there's one very important piece of content in the KB Article that really needs its own special highlight. In the Introduction section it reads:

Important All future security and nonsecurity updates for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 require this update to be installed. We recommend that you install this update on your Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2-based computer in order to receive continued future updates.

""I think that Rxd meant the RTMs are effectively Betas. ""
Not if that acronym is true to it's meaning. HW manufacturers need some time to implement OS to their machines in advance so their computers will come with most up to date OS. In the past it also meant that it was finished OS sent to be printed on the media (floppys, CDs, DVDs) and sent to distributors and stores.
If so, it means it is a finished product and will be released as such.
As updates are concerned, it stands to reason that some of them are required to be installed first in order for the next one to be implemented as they are incremental and address the same issue. Isn't it better for patches to come at faster pace than having to wait for service packs for longer time ?
No OS, or program, or anything for that matter is perfect (Windows certainly is not) so updates, upgrades etc. should be welcomed and not being scoffed at. New ideas and technologies come at fast pace nowadays so what's good enough now, does not mean it will be tomorrow.
So, "Keep up with the Joneses " and be happy, there are even automatic tools for that.

Maybe it's just me, but daily 'updates' and pseudo-mandatory new OS versions every 6 months are REALLY starting to make me angry.

I want to be able to update what and when I choose to, and once every three years is just fine for a new OS build.

Instead, sadly, I'm slowly but surely losing interest, the way computing seems to be headed.

Wenda..

Why not just turn off windows update and enable it once every 3 years? The updates are only mandatory if you want future updates.

Yea, I quite agree. I keep mine turned off, and every now and then I'll go in and see what's available. Last time was early February. I doubt that I'll bother with this so-called 8.1 update 1....... unless some very compelling reason presents itself.

Waiting for 9, hoping for better...

One of the updates in that update package is a security update. That security update is a prerequisite for any further security updates. So if you don't install update 1 you won't get any further security updates. The readme that comes in the update package lists what order to install the updates, I believe there are 6. I'm not sure which one is the security update. That's the way it was explained to me anyway.

Not sure how good idea it is, not updating regularly. Threats are coming at much higher rates than it used to be few years ago. Win8 is also pretty new OS and can't be expected to have everything in the best shape from day one. Updates are now nicely arranged and almost painless to install even automatically. Until now, only 8.1 was a more of relatively major updates, newest ones are mostly cosmetic but with some security and usability gains. Whoever doesn't update to 8.1 and latest update coming will be missing a lot.

Sorry Rickkins, maybe he's right about language we from "colonies" talk and write in but that's part of us being Canadians and from "defacto" free country which we love without a need to bow to any queen or king and even less bound to use " queen's English".
Once somebody starts being "grammar police", you can be sure he has lost his argument.

Not really. Kind of off topic. It depends.
When someone says "Microsoft have" I almost immediately go with Alt-F4.

Proofreading is a skill the follows a set of defined rules.
To successfully publish a document, it is usually reviewed by professionals that understand proper language.
Otherwise, it is just slang. The use of slang for a technical presentation is telling.

On topic, security updates are not necessarily needed in real time but if they make changes to the kernel,
then there is probably an install sequence that is important.

People post on forums to show different opinions and such, and to help others. then there are posters who just spread negativity. You are the later.

Not everyone agrees but it should be kept somewhat friendly.

You should uninstall 8 and go to 7 or whatever your choice is, and leave this forum.

That is my opinion on you and your rudeness to other members here.

Nice try Dude, but no sale. If ya had read a little bit more, you'd have surely noticed that the only time I get snarky is when replying to denigrating remarks. (I've just never been a turn the other cheek kinda guy)

All other times I'm a sheer delight....:geek:

Also, for most of us, or at least some of us, we've been debating the metro thing since the beginning and I like to think that even though we thoroughly disagree with the other side's position, we do for the most part respect each other.
