Windows 8.1 RTM Released to MSDN & Technet

Windows 8.1 is now available for download from Technet & MSDN

Based on the feedback from you and our partners, we’re pleased to announce that we will be making available our current Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Pro RTM builds (as well as Windows Server 2012 R2 RTM builds) to the developer and IT professional communities via MSDN and TechNet subscriptions. The current Windows 8.1 Enterprise RTM build will be available through MSDN and TechNet for businesses later this month. For developers, we are also making available the Visual Studio 2013 Release Candidate, which you can download here. I lost my WM one but everything else remained intact. I guess it depends on which ones were used. WM was easily restored however albeit not being recommended to do so.

If you are using the hacked Windows Mail the update to Win 8.1 will break it. Same thing with sfc /scannow command. It "fixes" the Windows Mail folder back to the original contents in Win 7, 8 and 8.1.

Windows Live Mail is a different entity altogether and furthermore Microsoft is abandoning the Windows Live (WL) brand entirely in Windows 8.

No they are not. What they are abandoning is the term "live", as it conflicts with their Apps. It is still available for download in Essentials and is still fully supported.

Those were Brink's words not mine and pulled directly from the now defunct WM tutorial. I think he meant you wont find a link the Windows Live anywhere in 8/8.1. WLM is fine except if you have lots of accounts (or "identities") and then it can be exasperating as it makes a complete set of folders for each account. I tried it and dropped it for that reason.

Windows Mail is the old software that shipped with Vista and was previously called Outlook Express. You could make it run on newer versions of Windows by copying some files from a Vista install and doing a few registry tweaks.

Windows Live Mail is the internet based email client that replaced it.

Similar names but 2 completely different programs.

Lol! Sometimes I have to agree with the h8ers. MS can be confusing at times, especially with restructuring. Not only do we have to sort the mail, we have to sort the mail programs.

I don't how the elite get their mail, but iTunes has been has been around forever. So has Gmail. Not MS. First it was Hotmail. Then Live. And wasn't there another one or two? Now it's all Outlook.com. Dah! Not sure, but your Outlook program, which is bundled in Office, is probably the most used email program in the world.

Anywho, is not WLM still bundled in WLE? Last I heard it was. I use the Metro WM app, so I wouldn't know anymore.

What do you mean by 'internet based'?
I thought WLM it was a desktop client program, which doesn't need the internet to operate (as long as your machine can 'see' the email servers).

i use windows live mail with 5 email accts ,and it sorts my mail just fine to all 5 accts .
i have access to office outlook for free, I have it installed with one acct setup , ,but for some reason i keep using live mail

I would much rather the mail sorted into a common Inbox then I could choose which Identity to respond from using a drop-down menu as in WM. I just find the way it separates each Identity makes the UI cumbersome.

to each there own for sure ,I like how it groups all unread messages ,I can worry about what email acct its from later .

I just rebooted the win8.1 install where I lost windows live mail after the upgrade to the msdn win8.1 ,and WLM is back and working fine

Not trying to sell anyone WLM in particular but you can do this. I have 6 accounts, the quick views of "All Unread"/"All Inbox" acts as a common Inbox. When you reply it defaults to the address it was sent to but you can change it to any of the others. I never expand the individual inbox views. It is the main reason I don't use the mail app really - I cant seem to make a common inbox - but there also you can also chose the account to reply from.

The only thing I prefer in Outlook is the formatting options really but it isn't worth me paying for.

Not forgetting the "message rules" options in Windows live mail. That can automate some useful things.
