Note   Note
Note that although you may previously purchase a legit Windows 8 product key, the product key is unlikely able to be used to install or upgrade to Windows 8.1. Hence you will need the following product key to initiate the install or upgrade:

Windows 8 (core): 334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT

Windows 8 PRO: XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB

The keys above will let you install 8.1, but that's all it does. After installation is complete, you will still have to activate with your own Windows 8 key.

Well, Windows 8.1 RTM 64-bit with Media Center is finally and successfully installed.

Had a few problems/issues, but got around them OK.

1/ I could only keep files with an upgrade over 8 Pro, not settings, apps or programs. A clean install here failed.

Wenda.

You can't keep your settings, apps & so on, if you're using English(UK) or any other language pack version. You have to use English(US) with your Windows 8. Then you can upgrade without any problems.

Ah, OK.

Thanks for that, tst.

Got it sorted eventually, anyhow, and have taken a system image, so it should be a while before I have to do it again.

Wenda.

Activate with your legit Windows-8-Pro / Core - Key. Add the WMC with your legit WMC-Key. That is how it worked for me.

You can only use a 8-Pro-Key with a 8.1-Pro-Install, as far I know. Did you mix up Pro and Core ? Tried Phone-Activation ?

So I found this Torrent for Windows 8.1 build 9471 from h33t before I came across the RTM build a couple days ago which comes with some interesting registry tweaks already done to Windows on the ISO image.

Link: [LINK REMOVED BY ADMIN]

I was wondering if anyone knows how the tweaks are done manually using regedit particularly these:

- Kill apps on shutdown instantly (this was default in Windows 8 and has been changed in Windows 8.1, I really want this back)
- Kill Tasks instantly
- Make Command Prompt always run as admin (also want this really bad too I use Command quite often and it gets really old having to right click run as Admin)

Thanks in advance,

Are you saying that anyone that started with an OEM Windows 8 or upgraded to Windows 8 from OEM Windows 7, has to move to the back of the bus?

I do believe its just upgrade keys that won't work. If you bought the upgrade version and not a full version of 8, 8.1 won't accept the upgrade keys. An upgrade to 8.1 though the store will work but a clean install won't. On a clean install 8.1 won't accept upgrade keys.

- Kill apps on shutdown instantly (this was default in Windows 8 and has been changed in Windows 8.1, I really want this back)
- Kill Tasks instantly

Doing these on shutdown is actually not a good thing. When some apps don't close out properly, they can corrupt.
Second, if you are working on documents and you have not saved them and you accidentally shutdown, or the system tries to reboot for an update or other reason, you can lose all your work as you are not prompted to save it.
This is a throw back from very early XP days for a faster shutdown, and has been proven to not be a good thing.
Yet, it's a staple of Geek Squad PC speed tweaks, and again, is a bad thing, not a good thing.

On today's PC's it really is not needed.

- Make Command Prompt always run as admin (also want this really bad too I use Command quite often and it gets really old having to right click run as Admin)

You don't have to do that, you can do it the same as you did in Win7, Search, type cmd and hit CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER

However, this will add it to the right click context menu.
You can Shift+RightClick the Desktop to get the prompt as well.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\runas]
@="Open Command Window Here (Administrator)"

I will keep this downloaded ISO around in case I want to do a another clean install on my desktop machine. I guess if I want to do a clean install on my laptop I will need to install Windows 7 Ultimate, downgrade to Windows 8 PRO, add the Windows Media Pack and then upgrade to Windows 8.1 PRO. I wonder if they will sell a Windows Games Pack.

Hi there
the 64 bit version (leaked) seems to work just fine -- trying it in a VM for now.

Get it from "The usual places" !!.

Note though -- as it's a Torrent always run from a VM first -- even if the torrent seems to be 100% OK -- you never know !!.

Cheers

Acronis True Image 2014 does not install with Windows 8.1 x64
Just put 8.1 x64 RTM on, did an UPGRADE over the preview release. Seems to be running as well as the preview release did. Nothing new from what I can see so far.

@ Tepid

I think the - Kill apps on shutdown instantly (this was default in Windows 8 and has been changed in Windows 8.1, I really want this back) is not meant as in when the OS is being shutdown but the apps themselves.

In Windows 8.1 closing an apps does not kill the app off memory instantly like it did in Windows 8, instead the app stays on the memory in the case you may access it again during the same session for faster app startup; whereas in Windows 8 closing an app via top-left corner actually remove the process from the task manager almost instantly and thus unused apps are taking on idle memory usage when not being used as they do in Windows 8.1.

I wonder if they will sell a Windows Games Pack.

I'm re-uploading a Windows-8-Game-Pack, which should work under Windows-8.1 as well.

And its working like a charm for me at this time...

Regarding Activation we will have to wait till fall of 2013 for M$ to get their Activation servers online... but its all good good good! ;)
