Note   Note
Note that although you may previously purchase a legit Windows 8 product key, the product key is unlikely able to be used to install or upgrade to Windows 8.1. Hence you will need the following product key to initiate the install or upgrade:

Windows 8 (core): 334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT

Windows 8 PRO: XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB

The keys above will let you install 8.1, but that's all it does. After installation is complete, you will still have to activate with your own Windows 8 key.

I may have misread your post.

If you are using windows setup to install, there is a key for that. You need your own purchased key to activate afterwards.

...and what's that key?

I googled it, installed 8.1 and i have activated with my key. Thanks for the tip.

I find it stupid anyway....i mean, if i can clean install windows 8 with some default key and then activate with my upgrade key, why didn't they just make one key that works everywhere and at anytime (pre/post install)?

If you have a legit key you are able to activate the 8.1-RTM, like the Pro. There are "rumors", that you are able to activate the WMC-Part as well, but I had no time to try it myself yet. Install and Activation-Key's are different. The Install-Key is similar to the PreView the same for everyone, but the Activation-Key is your legit Key, like from 8-Pro or 8-Pro-WMC.

Some could upgrade without loosing something and some not, but as I didn't try it yet, I can't confirm it from my side.

Even if you want to wait for the official release day, it's still handy to have the ISO's.

:)

I did a few days ago a fresh (legit) Windows-8-Pro-WMC-x64 install and started the 8.1-ISO-Setup from the Desktop and had the option to upgrade and to keep everything.

The 8.1-Pro-Install-Key worked without any issues and afterwards I activated with my legit Windows-8-Pro-x64-Key and added the WMC with my legit Windows-8-WMC-Key, which I activated also.

I didn't go offline and I didn't activate via phone / skype.

The only mature issue I have is, that my USB-Ports are not working (Error-Code 19) and had to be disabled.

That's really strange, as I had now issues under Windows-8-Pro-WMC-x64 with it.

I tried to un-install / re-install etc.pp. all the USB-Stuff and even connected all my gadgets on different ports and separately, but I couldn't fix the problem for now.

It's a bit annoying that I can't connect all my gadgets and that I have to use my external USB-3.0-Drives via USB-2.0-Ports.

If someone has a solution for it or knows different drivers etc., then please let me know.

I got my old machine out of storage and all it has installed is Windows 8 Pro. I gave this 8.1 RTM Pro a try and after the key was accepted it and I told it to keep nothing, it started to install... and then a small window popped up saying Install Failed. I don't know why it would fail, this machine had no problem with the 8.1 preview. I can't be bothered to figure out why it failed, maybe it tried to download updates? The machine is back in storage. I hope that when 8.1 is available in the Windows Store, that it will not do the same.

Ok, I figured out the problem of the USB-3.0-Part.

I had to un-install the Asus-AI-Suite-II, do a re-boot, re-install the Asus-AI-Suite-II, another re-boot and the issue was fixed.

The issue was related to the USB-3.0-Boost-Function, which doesn't work under 8.1 yet.

Just did a fresh installation of Windows 8.1 Pro RTM on a spare SSD activated with genuine serial and Media Center added, all I can say is wow!

This is what Windows 8 should have been upon release, if only Microsoft had added a Modern Style Start Menu and translucent Windows (like the taskbar) to the RTM it would have been near perfect IMHO.

I've just started using the RTM for 3 hours or so and I'm already starting to like Windows 8.1 more than Windows 8 and 7.

Question:

Does anyone know what SmartScreen Filter to check web content the Windows Store apps use in PC Settings > Privacy does and if it's sending any information to Microsoft like the OS SmartScreen filter (I have the OS one disabled)?

It's from a M$ outsourcing company employee that obtains these when M$ distributes them to RTM's.

Do keep us informed of the Trojans and whatnot going on there :D

Thanks

All leaks from WZOR have always been 100% genuine... very reliable source.

Well, Windows 8.1 RTM 64-bit with Media Center is finally and successfully installed.

Had a few problems/issues, but got around them OK.

1/ I could only keep files with an upgrade over 8 Pro, not settings, apps or programs. A clean install here failed.

2/ A clean install from DVD failed twice for no discernible reason. I ended up restoring an 8.1 beta image and
doing a clean install (keep nothing) over it. That worked without a problem.

3/ .NET Framework 3.5 wouldn't install. The error had a 'How to fix' link, which didn't help. I ended up 'dism-ing'
it from the DVD via the command-line, and it installed just fine. Go figure...

Other than that, it seems fine. All my programs work, and it found all the hardware with no problems. The small
but annoying bugs that so plagued my experience with the beta appear to have been largely fixed.

All-in-all, I'm quite happy with it so far. And I'm not using any Start Menu replacements, I use All Apps instead.

Takes some getting used-to, but works quite well. Much better than the Start Screen, IMHO. I hardly ever use
it. And since I boot direct to the desktop, I hardly even see it.

Here's a peek...

Wenda.

You can't keep your settings, apps & so on, if you're using English(UK) or any other language pack version. You have to use English(US) with your Windows 8. Then you can upgrade without any problems.
