Windows 8.1 .bat file glitched

Something is extremely wrong if you cannot set this. Try setting your UAC down to the lowest level at "Control Panel\User Accounts and Family Safety\User Accounts".

Don't try to change the program, just remove the association to Notepad. If the Control Panel interface won't let you do it, Open Regedit and look for all instances of ".bat" and remove ONLY the references to Notepad.exe.

As far as "Sync your Settings" goes, that has no bearing on it, I already checked.

You should be able to take any BAT file you made and just change the extension to CMD if you simply cannot use BAT files.

You can always try something like this:

Advanced BAT to EXE Converter - Freeware compile batch files to exe with Mouse Input

Pump one of your BAT files into that, and see if it makes an EXE that works.

Actually, I just tried that with one of mine, and it made a perfectly working EXE file, so give it a try. You can even build the EXE from a BAT right in the Program.

It's a free program but you can buy a Pro version of it.

I just realised, you are using 8.1 and I'm on 8, so there may be a Lockout on BAT files for 8.1

Sorry I forgot to mention and change that when I deleted everything and reinstalled I installed on Windows 8 Pro also I can change it to Notepad and Internet Explorer and such but not cmd.exe in System32

Thats why you will have to manually remove the Notepad association. Dont try to change it, try to remove it. Shawn may be able to create a Registry script that can do it, I asked him.

It seems that once you set the Notepad to BAT, it cannot be changed back. You must have told it to open with Notepad "always" - You have to make sure that the "Always Open with this program" is NOT checked and then you will have and Open and an Edit for BAT. But once it's set to always open with Notepad, thats it.

Try the "BAttoEXE" link I posted, it works well and that may solve all of this.

Ok, I'm on my Dell Precision 370 Workstation and I'm going to Break my BAT files. Hopefully I'll be able to see if it even allows me to fix it.

Alright, there are 2 and only 2 solutions. The first is to use a restore point and set your system back to the day before you fouled up the bat file. The second is to perform an in-place install.

I don't believe that your system had BAT fouled up from the start, BAT files by default will immediately open with CMD.exe. There should never be any reason to modify what opens them, because the Defaults "Open" and "Edit" should be already set in the Context Menu.

Be careful what programs you install, like NOTEPAD replacement apps like UUedit (UltraEdit) or the like - they WILL replace the default association without telling you. And once you change BAT to Notepad, it can NOT be changed back to CMD.exe. After any Fresh Install, Upgrade Install or In-Place install, check your BAT files before you install anything else. You won't have to do a complete reinstall, just an in-place install.

We'll keep looking for a Reg or other fix for this, but this is System Wide for Windows 8- No other solutions for this have been found anywhere else on the net either.

I'm not gettin in to this again, if your install disk installs the OS and this issue is present from the start, then there is something very wrong with it- Download a new install disk.

Hi guys. I know this is an old old thread, but seeing as it in the top google results for searches on this issue I thought I'd share a simple solution.

After running the appropriate .reg file found on this page Default File Associations - Restore in Windows 8, do the following. (direct .bat link here)

Open regedit.exe

Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\batfile\shell\open\command

Set the default value to the absolute path of cmd.exe followed by /C "%1" %* - my value looks like C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C "%1" %*

Now open up Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Associatiate a file type or protocall with a program

Find the entry for .bat and click change. You should see the option Windows Command Processor. If not, set it to something else first and do it again - I found it may not show the registry defined option at first.

DONE. You can now run .bat files and you didn't have to reinstall. Microsoft seem to have done something very strange here, and decided to set up their file associations somewhere other than the registry - though to fix things you need to make registry changes!? Who knows. I know the above works though!
