Please do not be offended but autoruns is way above my skill level. I saw the registry keys and knew to stay away.
I do appreciate your kind offer, however.

This program will allow you to do a lot of things but we are only interested in working with Internet Explorer Add-ons.

Let me explain to you using the screen shot below so you'll be more comfortable. I have 4 text boxes labeled 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Right click on "autoruns.exe" and run as "Administrator"

  1. In box 1. Click on Internet Explorer tab so that it will display all the add-ons that were installed.
  2. In box 2. If you uncheck one or more, meaning you want to disable one or more add-ons
  3. Box 3 displays information about the registry entries of these add-ons. You don't need to do anything with them
  4. Box 4. If you want to remove the add-on(s) from Internet Explorer. Just right click on it then click on Delete.
In summary:

  • If you want to disable add-on(s), use box 2
  • If you want to remove add-on(s), use box 4

disabling or deleting addon

If I were to disable or delete an add-on, would this cause irreversible damage or would the add-on reinstall or rectify itself?
May I add, I am very appreciative of the work and time you took in displaying the diagram and the explanation.
I think I will give it a try if there is an instability. My slowness varies and I suspect my isp and where I am down stream. At times I wait for a page and other times I zip along.

If you just disable them then nothing are deleted. They are still in your system except they are not running so later on, you decide to run them again then just put a check mark to enable them again.

Yes, it is a possibility that slowness can be your ISP, can be the DNS server, can be your router etc...
There are a lot of variables so we have to find out which one is the culprit and it is hard trying to trouble shoot on line as compared to sitting in front of the PC so you can a better picture of what's going on.

Under "Internet Explorer" tab, they all are add-ons. The startup entries are under "Logon" tab

If you have a lot of entries under "Internet Explorer" tab then that can cause slowness.

If that's the case then you also have the same problem as Peter2. I use Firefox instead of IE 10 but when I try IE10, they are both the same speed and open almost instantly. It should not have 5-10 seconds delay

Win8 is installed on my flagship which has extreme mobo/CPU, SATA3 SSD HD, 12GB RAM and 3 x GTX SLI linked graphic cards.

Am running IE10 desktop version, not app in start screen. IE10 has progressively become slower and slower opening any website, including favorites, for which cookies are saved.

After spending a lot of time and effort trying various things suggested in this thread, nothing seems to work.

Also running StartIsBack and booting direct to desktop. Since SIB uses native W8 start menu files I don't think this is the problem. Even so, have also tried booting through Start Screen.

Win7 is installed on my backup machine and connected to same modem on my flagship by WiFi Wireless Adaptor, and on this machine, using IE9 with same protection of Avast, Zone Alarm ... web sites snap open instantly.

I also notice boot up time for W8 has gone from 28 secs to 38. Win7 on backup machine boots in 32 secs.

Hi Mustang,

Just an FYI that my comparison of boot times (on my two machines) shows that Windows 8 boots faster than Windows 7. Specifically, my Windows 8 machine boots to the desktop in about 10 seconds flat; whereas Windows 7 takes considerably longer (haven't timed it yet). Of course, how long a boot takes is dependent on many factors and in my case both machines are virtually "mirror images" of each other. I am using the fast boot option on the Win 8 machine and I am not using any sort of ready boost config on the Win 7 rig. Oh, and I am using Start8 on the Win 8 to bypass the start screen.

Cheers

Did an HD unconditional format and clean reinstall of W8.

Set it to fast startup, (hybrid), as per tutorial. Start up is now 28 secs. It takes 18 secs to display the Intel board info of BIOS version, drives etc ... then 10 secs more to boot to start screen from there. My machine has 2 internal SATA3 SSDs, I eSATA spinner and 1 USB3 HD ... plus USB printer and web cam.

What machine are you booting it on? Does it by-pass the preliminary checks?

After using the following shortcut to open IE10, it's back to full speed. It's found here:

It's back at full speed because you re-installed Windows 8. It has nothing to do with the shortcut.

Whaa very old Dimension 8400t machine are you booting it on? Does it by-pass the preliminary checks?

Hi Mustang,

I have a very old Dimension 8400 (see my specs for more info). The BIOS is very basic and has virtually no worthwhile options so I have it set to default. The Dell splash screen comes on (and disappears) in a few seconds. Then I get about 1-2 seconds of a black screen. Then the Windows 8 Start Screen blinks (can barely catch a glimpse) and then I'm on the desktop. FYI, I have minimal startup programs. I only have a USB printer plugged in. My SSD SATA Drive is a Patriot Pyro 60GB running at SATA I speeds. I honestly don't know what makes it boot that fast; go figure?

After turning on hybrid sleep as per tutorial, and clicking "Sleep" on shut down button options on StartIsBack, the PC is totally off ... blue light fan off ... literally in 3 secs. Reboot from sleep is 6 secs.

When I first ran IE10 with Google as home page, after re-loading W8, it was still taking 8 - 10 secs for Google to load. Quite by accident I came across the Quick Launch option and Google snapped open immediately after using it. So go figure?

The funny thing is that even after using Safety option on IE10 to remove everything: Temp inet files, cookies, history, download history, passwords, active x filtering ... with "save favorites" unticked ... Google still snaps open. Seems it's saving something hidden, because if CleanUp by Steven Gould is run after Safety clean, it detects a browser still running.

Normally after turning off my PC I turn the power off at the wall and hit the start button on the tower to empty the capacitors of residual current.

So I'll turn it off using "Sleep"; then turn power off to empty capacitors; then reboot to see if has cold memory to restart quickly.

Update: It's hot memory for sleep/hibernate. After total power off and capacitors emptied it took 31 secs to boot. Which makes sense.

However, it seems that every time I reload W8 to fix a problem, a new one appears. I've made repeated Acronis backup images of W8 as a bare bones installations; to fully loaded installations ... in native format ... and with added third party start menus, W7 games, etc. And Acronis has never failed to create a valid image of the C drive.

For some unknown reason, when I made my latest copy of Win8 in it's native format, to 2 external media, and one internal SSD HD, only one of the 3 images showed up when I rebooted windows. And it showed zero data. I ran a file check/repair on the drive and after reboot had the image intact. But the other two failed to appear after the same process.

It's the reverse of the old adage ... one door opens and another one shuts! Computers! Yeeeeccchhhh!

Hi again Mustang,

My 10 second boot is from a cold start (must be powered down and push power on button).
My restart time is considerably longer (haven't timed it yet).

Just an FYI, here's my event viewer logs from a cold start:

events.jpg

The two warnings are expected and are attributable to my configuration (running without a swap file).

If you want to play with this more, you can download this utility which will clear all event logs.

Event Viewer One Click Clear - Windows 7 Support Forums

Run it just before you power down and on the next power up, you'll be able to compare your logs to mine.
Please understand that I am not encouraging you to do this. Have fun!
