Why Windows 8 isn't the monster hybrid some tout it as...

Well a touchscreen gives you the problem that you have to be very close to the screen. Otherwise your shoulder and arm will be very tired after a days work.

Maybe if we only could point to the screen, elbow resting on the table and you would see a little red point on the screen (like with a laser), one could work like that. But can this replace the mouse.....I don't think so.

Could be nice if you are a professor at school with a big screen. you could touch the screen with a large stick.....

I'm sure Microsoft is well aware that touch for desktop use is not the most productive which is why they are coming out with gesture mice and keyboards. If you have a gesture mouse and you mimic touch on it to navigate Windows 8 while you're using the mouse navigation would be a breeze without having touch your screen.

Well, us naysayers probably don't want to change our keyboards and mice. I sure don't, after having invested in mechanical keyboards and mice/trackballs that I really, really like.

Not to mention, these new keyboards and mice are probably wireless only and I don't do wireless for mice/keyboards. I see absolutely no point in it. At least not for my setup.

Yeah, I want to have to continually pick up and set down a stylus and then reach out across my desk and draw on my monitor and potentially push it around a bit. Sounds great.

Now MY question is do you even try to think about different usage scenarios other than a mouse?
Or better yet, HAVE you tried using touch on Windows?

Think about it, you have a touch screen that has multi-point input and you can use your finger for general navigation. But for the more precision based programs like Excel, a stylus (digital pen for me as I'd like to write down notes on the fly) you literally have a mouse pointer type of precision with touch. Simple. And as touch screens get even better and coding gets better, a stylus won't be needed, but maybe for designers. Now of course, this would be great for tablet PCs, for desktops; you'd need the screen closer obviously. But I bet touch AIO PCs will be already setup for the screen to be a foot away from the user.

Hipsy Gipsie, IMO it's smart strategy from Microsoft all these amrtphone stuffs (just W8 for Desktop is terrible but ok, I'let that for a moment) But every one has their own need and wishes. Personaly I realy don't need and DO NOT WANT a computer that I carry with me all the time and certainly not a cell-phone sized computer. The reason is that I don't want to carry it with special care, I don't want to break it, to hae falling in water, being stolen or forgotten in some place. I have no such a device. My mobile phone doesn't even display colors and I'm very happy with it. And I don't need it. In fact I save a lot of time not bothering with yet another gadget or instrument. But I need a desktop PC which stands always on the same place, don't risk of falling on the floor or being taken away by the kids. It has a large keyboard, a mouse, a large monitor. I realy need double deck DVD burners and I realy need two HD, which I can replace at any moment if one fails. I cannot imagine a computer where I cannot quickely replace the DVD drive or the HD, or where I don't have two HD and two DVD drives. I hate laptop keyboards and cannot work with a mouse. Even the mouse is the minimalist pointing device since I'm used to using a A4 sized drawing tablet. If one part fails on a laptop it's only a question of luck if a repair shop can fix it. Usualy after 3 weeks usualy your get a call from the guy telling that they can't. Either they don't find the part or it's so expensie you better buy a new laptop. With a desktop PC you can fix anything yourself in a matter of hours. Laptops have their use when you realy need to carry all your works with you on a daily basis. But it doesn't make life easier all the time. If I'm away from my computer, I take paper and a pen and write things down. It's much easier than carrying an electronic device all the time with me. Paper beats smartphone by a long shot, IMO.

Yes, everyone has there wants and needs. As a builder with carpentry as a forte, I buy and keep on hand at least two of every tool I use, especially hand tools, for they get broke or lost more often. It's my professional tools. If I were a Pro as a computer user in any field of tech, I would have at least one backup of whatever I use.

You can use a pen and paper -> That's cool. I prefer to use a note app with reminders or voice recording on my Droid. I realize some will die as dinosaurs. :p

I like symmetry.

Please don't underestimate touch, for it's here and will continue to advance in the future. Would you agree that it is the fastest way to navigate? Faster than a mouse, stylus, etc.?
Touch is fine, I use it on my phone. I still prefer a physical keyboard on my phone for typing though, I'll be honest.

I would not agree that it's the fastest way to navigate. Not in it's current implementation. Take this forum for example and this thread, to get to page 7 or 8, there is a very small link that I have to select to hit this page. Now, with my mouse/trackball/touchpad it's a piece of cake. Using my finger on my tablet or phone...it's a crapshoot as to whether I will hit it or not. Take any application that has a dropdown list box, and try to select not only the arrow to fly out the box, but the selection that you want in the box. And don't get me started on hover over mouse flyouts on websites. Those are hard enough with a mouse, let alone a touch interface.
