Which Web Browser Is Best Under Windows 8?

Welcome to our first-ever Web Browser Grand Prix on Windows 8! Will Chrome remain the reigning Windows champion? Is Internet Explorer 10 going to smash the competition like its predecessor? Does Opera 12.10 finally deliver on what version 12 promised?

For the rest, people who compare Internet Explorer to Chrome or Firefox are by definition using their browsers on a very basic mode and are probably not very advanced or heavy users.
I think that is quite insulting really. I use browsers that 'do the job for me' not because I am a nerd user or anything else. I have 19-20 web sites and used to build my own pc's. And also, remember, that nobody knows the answer to anything until they are told it.

Insulting? I don't see where the insult is. I would apologize if so, but I can't find where the insult can be.

It's very simple, with Chrome or Firefox you can do many more things, work much faster, save time, etc, because of the extensions or included features.

You can take pictures with a mobile phone, but professionals use expensive cameras for a reason. This is the same case.

Insulting? I don't see where the insult is. I would apologize if so, but I can't find where the insult can be.

Reasons for choosing a particular browser may vary a great deal from the ones you are able to imagine. They may like the layout and feel extensions are a distraction or be something I can't imagine either. But you naturally assume, it is because they are not advanced users.. Therein lies the insult..

When you make assumptions on other peoples motives based on your own gut feeling that is being prejudice, and you should expect that people will take offence..

And another failure is using analogies that conclude that simplicity/price equates to amateurism and complexity/price to professionalism.

The inference is that people who compare browsers do not know what they are talking about - 'probably not very advanced'. I accept that you did not mean it to sound that way but a favourite thing I always remember is 'what you type is not always what is read'.

The problem with browsers is that everyone sees differently. I used to love firefox but it is becoming a dinosaur, too slow, refuses to close down quickly etc. If switching sites or programmes, I get pop ups telling me firefox has not closed down, and I have to wait about 30 secs then it works fine. A friend of mine swears by Chrome, another Opera, another IE and refuses to try anything different. The end result is confusion and doubt.

Ad blocker makes a huge difference and also cuts out some of the purveyors of adware and malware. I won't use a browser that doesn't offer it--I contribute to the developer.

I agree with you about Firefox, I always used exactly those words, "dinosaur", "slow", "heavy", "old concepts". That is why I never used it much. But still, along with Chrome it is the browser with more extensions and features. I was using Opera many years ago, then Maxthon, then ChromePlus. The reason was speed, features and extensions. Chrome started being a very naked browser. A bit heavy but fast, although naked in features. Then ChromePlus came out with more features and then Chrome offered extensions and made the difference.

I think it is you who took my words offensively. Any objective analysis shows that Internet Explorer has been the browser of choice of the less advanced users. Of course there are exceptions and you can be a highly advanced user who prefers IE for whatever your reasons, but that doesn't change the fact that IE offers much less than Firefox or Chrome and that most non-skilled users have used it since the 90s as they didn't even know that other browsers existed. Just as I mention Firefox as richer/better than IE but I have never used it for my own taste for being too slow and heavy. I was being objective.

One more example. Despite I own Photoshop, I use a very old, small and simple Image Editor called PixBuilder for my day to day. The reason is that is very light and fast, opens very fast and does the basic stuff very well and very fast, while Photoshop is slower to open, heavier and more compicated (with more steps) for some usual actions. I assume that PixBuilder would be for beginners and Photoshop is much better and for professionals. And I wouldn't feel offended for reading such a statement because it is true.

Hmm, that's odd. I've been running the browser for more than a year on several pc's, and I have never had problems of that sort. Are you sure you got it from the official source. Maybe someone have made a custom bundle. The official source is The Pale Moon Project homepage

That is really strange. I've just downloaded the exe and scanned with Windows Defender and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and found nothing. I've also uploaded the exe to Virustotal, which resulted in a 0/43 detection: link

There are several mirrors on the site though. Which one(s) did you choose. I always choose "Pale Moon mirror (Direct link)".

If one of the mirror providers adds adware to the exe, we should probably email the Pale Moon developers and let them know.

EDIT: I've checked every mirror with VirusTotal, and none of them are infected.

I'm using IE10 as my main browser (with a few add-ons) and Firefox
as my secondary (mainly for Farcebook and YouTube because it has
a good video-grabber).

My very first browser was Netscape Navigator, my first IE version was IE3....

    Borderline pathetic.
for me its IE10 ,I used firefox in win7 as the default ,but in win8 I rarely use firefox ,WHY ,not sure just like ie10 better
I've used IE my whole life except for a Linux netbook I once used with Firefox - Never found anything I liked better than IE . . . . until I bought a new Windows 8 touch screen notebook - Now it appears my IE days may be over

Why? One word . . . . Bing! Bing is the default (and only search engine) that comes loaded with Win8 and IE10. If you are using Win8 in the desktop mode, it is possible to load other search engines and make any one of them you like the default (though it will not let you delete Bing) but if you're using Win8 in the metro mode on a touch screen PC, for some strange reason IE10 will not allow you to add any other browser to the list, so since there's nothing else there but Bing to choose from, you're stuck with it

Sad that Microsoft seems intent on driving those of us who can't stand Bing toward some other browser, but that appears to be exactly what they are doing. I'm going to miss IE and I hope Chrome isn't too hard to get used to . . . . I guess it's the logical choice for me because I prefer Google searches to anything else

I will try waterfox but firefox has gone into the browser version of the funny farm. At present my default is Chrome and no real complaints, I do not think any of them are prefect, least of all IE10 and FF.

As for search engines - google, no contest. I had to tell Win update to hide the Bing download, it kept telling me I need it, and I said no I don't. Google is my default which is an option easily adjusted.

just been checking waterfox out, it says 64 bit - is it ok for a 32 bit pc?
Answer: No. This application will not run on your pc.

I do have a 64 bit laptop, will try it on that
