What games can Windows 8 play?

Tomb Raider 1 (the old one, not the 2013 version) works now, but usually crashes every time I Alt-Tab (It uses DOS/DOSBox). And it has vertical black bars on both sides of the screen due to it not being able to make use of widescreen resolutions. It looks OK when compared to the PSX version, but the cutscenes are rendered horribly. And the worst part is that the PC version has no music, only ambient background noises, although there are some mods to add in the PSX version's music. I have TR 2 and 3 and well, TR 2 also frequently crashes. 3 is the only game that works halfway decently in terms of not crashing. But they all have enough issues that getting them to work properly is a major pain.

Here's an updated list of my games currently installed and working in Windows 8. Thanks to
Tonschuh,s tip, Max Payne 2 is running, although the initial screen takes an age to load it
runs perfectly after that.

@ Wenda: You may want to try using no-intro fixes (which is what the gaming community refers to them as), I have had success in getting alot of slow-loading games to load quicker. It is just a fix which removes the intro logos that appear just before a game's title screen, sometimes they can be skipped and sometimes not. The game itself isnt affected. Of course, it could just be your specs.

No, those logos and stuff run OK, it's between when you click/touch the icon to run the game and when you
see anything at all on the screen. The enclosed s/shot is the first screen of MP2, it takes up to a minute to
appear. Once 'PLAY' is clicked, the game runs very well indeed. Far better than it did on any of my previous
machines.
It's really no 'biggie' if that's the price I have to pay for the game to run.
And as I said, the game itself runs and plays flawlessly.

The only possible problem I could envisage regarding my system specs is that they may be too good.
See 'My System Spec' below.

Well done, Enigma, it appears we were both on the right track.

This machine has dual graphics and it would appear that MP2 does not like the GeForce GT555M, hence
the problem I was facing.

I switched the settings to force MP2 to run on the Intel 3000HD , and the problem went away immediately.

Gameplay, gfx quality and frame-rate appear unaffected.

I can't 'rep' you, but thanks for jogging my mind in that direction.

As an update, I recently had success today playing Medieval Total War in a VMware virtual machine. I used Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 Service Pack 2 as the OS, which is for all intents and purposes a Server version of XP. If I'm not mistaken the game was released during XP's days, and so it was optimized for that OS. Then I installed the VMware Tools package. The game wouldnt launch at first, throwing up a DirectSound/Direct3D error. So I did a little research and then ran dxdiag and enabled support for Direct Sound/Direct3D. After that it launched fine and is very playable. The only issue I'm having is that the sound makes static-like noises and crackles. I'm not sure what causes this, but I installed several other older games and they had the same issue. On Windows 8 it would launch and then CTD with an error right after the logos. So for now I'm just glad it's playable, Shogun Total War is next.

I'm also a Linux user, and as it stands now I think Windows 8 is great, but Linux is better in most ways except that it sucks for games. I've been slowly moving toward adopting it as my primary OS but cant find a way to get most Windows games to run reliably within Linux. But a short while ago I happened upon a method for running Windows in a bare-metal hypervisor, which gives direct access to the hardware. It is somewhat like a VMware or VirtualBox VM but is far more advanced. You can actually install your video card drivers and many other drivers within the virtualized Windows and play games at a level of performance and stability that is essentially native. It requires a very specialized hardware set, and one issue is that installing the video drivers in Windows gives the OS exclusive access to your display, meaning you cant switch back over to a GUI view of Linux even though it's running in the background. You can use a SSH tunnel to switch between the OSes in realtime but it is a pain to set up. If you have 2 video cards you can allocate one for the VM and the other to Linux to solve this issue. I had found a YouTube vid demonstrating it awhile back but cant find the link now.

@ Wenda: Do you have the retail version of Deus Ex 2 - Invisible War? I have the Steam version and it plays fine on Windows 8. But maybe that's because it doesnt use whatever proprietary DRM retail uses, just Steam.

If you want my personal view on it, it's OK to use no-cd cracks as long as your copy of the game is legit, regardless of the law.

As for your question, yes, applying a patch to your legal copy is still illegal. It's kind of a gray area as far as the laws are concerned. I live in the States, I have heard that Australia has more stricter laws regarding piracy, DRM circumvention, etc. So it varies slightly depending on location. And of course here we have the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, which in a nutshell states that circumventing DRM is illegal, except under very narrow circumstances.

I really dont think the admins will ban/warn you simply for mentioning cracks and your use of them, any reasonable admin can tell that we're not advocating piracy. I cant speak for them, but if they do comment it will most likely be just to say that we should mention cracks/piracy as little as possible, and only in a way that isnt advocating it. It's one of those things that are better left unspoken when it comes to many forums, because every community has it's own rules and the majority of sites lean toward the lawful side of things. We all know they are used, we can just wink silently at each other without saying anything. The forums still have to cover themselves as far as the law is concerned, that's why many prohibit/restrict/curtail the discussion of said topics.

Compatibility mode shouldnt be required, I assume you're installing from a disc, not a digital download service. Can you give more info about the problem, maybe even screenshots?

then why i can't play my prototype 2 ??

Just figured I would update by saying that I have been able to get both Total War (Medieval and Shogun, outlined in my earlier posts) working perfectly in an XP VM. It's not optimal but it's acceptable as long as the games play. I havent tried Bochs.
