I recently upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. Now, I find that downloading a file using IE11 works differently than it did under Windows 8 and results in spurious error messages. I am wondering if others experience the same problem.
Steps to reproduce the problem:
Navigate to Microsoft Download Center
Click Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830) - or any other download
Click the Download button
Note that instead of the .exe extension the file name ends in _exe
Click the down arrow next to Save and select Save As
Note the file name extension _exe; this is new under IE 11.
Note the error message indicating that the file couldn’t be downloaded.
Click View downloads
Note the error message.
Click Retry
The file downloads successfully
Note the file name ends in _exe; it must be renamed to .exe in order to be usable
