Solved Thoughts on Windows Phone 8?

You're welcome. Did you notice the "Windows Phone 8" tutorial section by Brink in the Forum's tutorials? Very helpful.

No I didn't, thanks for letting me know. I didn't even think to check since there is no official area for the Windows Phone OS on here. Thanks.

You’re welcome. :)

I noticed simply because I’m in the tutorial section a lot, not only for myself, but also to help others. Thankfully there’s a gazillion of them now, including some for WP8. Brink started posting WP8 tutes about 6 weeks ago just after he got his Nokia Lumia 1520. http://www.eightforums.com/chillout-room/34645-just-what-i-ve-been-waiting.html

Mr. Brink is all things Windows. I hear he is envy of his peers with his knowledge of Windows and his recherché tutorials. He is the backbone of VF, 7F, and 8F. Surely without him these forums wouldn’t be so sophisticated. You’ll have to ask him, but I think he sees MS’s vision and goal of an OS familiar across all devices in conjunction with WP8.

I've had the Nokia Lumia 920 for over a year (11/2012) and my wife and daughter will get new phones in March and they'll both get the Nokia Lumia 928. Great phone and we all really like Win8 phone OS.

For anyone reading this with a Windows Phone, tap on every bit of text you see on the screen. You may be pleasantly surprised at how some of that text is actually a link to something else. For example, when you're going to about to send a text to someone, their name/number is at the very top of the screen in small bold lettering. Tap on that, it'll go to that person's contact card. REAL handy when you decide to just call them versus texting them.

I've also had my Lumia 920 for over a year, love it EVEN more with the red shell, no att branding, GDR3 and Nokia Black firmware! Wow! I'm holding out for Nokia's (make that Microsoft's) next crop of Windows Phones with 8.1 on them. A feature that is known might be touchless touch, as well as expanding further on the PureView camera technology. Wow!

I know I really like my Nokia Lumia, I know it's only the entry level one the 520, but the features it has are fantastic. I love the camera and as I've always got my phone with me it's the only camera I use it takes very good photo's.

The reason I've only got the low version is that it came free from my network provider if I took out a contract, I was on pay as you go before, as the contract was only a couple of pounds more than what I was already paying a month I went with it.
I did have to do a 24 month contract before I can upgrade so not sure which version I'll be able to go to at the end but as each version of Lumia gets better and better whichever I get I'll be happy. ;)

Expensive? no.... Unpredictable? no... I've had mine since 11/2012 and have never had an issue with it that wasn't easily fixed, unlike my daughter's and wife's HTV Inspire that cannot be fixed or my son's iPhone, which is junk...

Expensive it is not, an iphone typically will run almost at 700 dollars off contract. Unpredictable, it is simply not. Too predictable it really is. Not trustworthy? That's a falsehood.

It isn't until you've tried to fix an iphone can you truly appreciate Nokia's engineering and truly understand how poor apple really is at making hardware. ;)

Those are strong words of which I see a few already disagree. I’ll have to also.

One question for you > Do you have reference to back up your statement or a dissertation on the subject?

As for me, I’ve been “cell phone” since one of these > Carrier and all. Circa 1995.

800px-Motorola_Power_PAK_Bag_Phone.jpg

Then I had one of these:

Nextel Phone.jpg

LOL! I actually ran that one over with my truck on a job site! I had a dumb phone after this, but I simply cant' remember what it was. However, it was a Motorola phone.

Then this:

moto-razr-v3.jpg

Then this:

Droid X2.jpeg

Presently this in black:

Lumia 1520 Group.jpeg

As you can see, I’ve been around the block a few times.

Please notice they were all Motorola phones. Why a Nokia this time? A few reasons. Firstly, Google bought Motorola. After using the Droid I dislike anything Google. I didn't want to move into their "Chromium" world.

I wanted a phablet for the size so as not to carry around two devices.

I wanted a Windows Phone, which works in conjunction with Windows 8/8.1. This simplified my life significantly. WP8 OS is far superior to Android in navigation, features, and over all usability.

I wanted quality. The bag phone and the Nextel phone were good, but the others were crap. I can testify that Nokia products are of good quality. Just as good as original Motorola products.

Why not an iPhone you may ask? I considered it, but too expensive and too limited IMO. I paid the introductory price of $550 USD for this Lumia and went prepay. A little pricy, but surely not as much as an iPhone. The 1520 has 16GB of storage with a SD slot for expanding up to as much as 64GB. I inserted a 16GB one I had from my Droid. The iPhone has no SD storage slot. One has to pick the size before purchase as seen here below. This is from the Apple Store online.

iPhone 5c iPhone 5c - Buy iPhone 5c in white, pink, yellow, blue, or green - Apple Store (U.S.)

iPhone Prices Snip 2.PNG

iPhone 5s iPhone 5s - Buy iPhone 5s in 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB - Apple Store (U.S.)

iPhone Prices Snip.PNG

To be fair I have to compare the Lumia 1520 to the 5s (64GB) since I can expand mine to that. In fact, I can expand mine to 80GB because I could slip a 64GB card in it.

The 5s (64GB) is $230 more than the 1520 with a $70 micro SD added, but has 16GBs more.
1520 has 6 inch display vs 4-3/4 inch
Quad core chip vs duo
Much better camera with more pixels and optics.
The 5s does have fingerprint identity sensor, which is a nice feature, but that’s about it.
Try and buy accessories and cables for the iPhones > Cha ching!

Then how about OneDrive, OneNote, Xbox (basic), and other MS services included for free. Honestly I wouldn't know what Apple offers and not to say Google doesn't offer any.

Overall the Lumias are better phones, especially if your running 8/8.1 or even prior on your other PC and/or devices. That’s really the beauty of it all.

BTW, I haven't had a land line for 15 years.

I think it's too expensive and unpredictable to buy it instead of a trustworthy brands

I assume this is a wind-up? I'm no 'fanboy' of any big corporations, however Nokia and Microsoft are about as trustworthy brands you can expect to get, along with Canon. I guess in part because a sizeable amount of their customer base are business users.

I get the impression from the internet that some people seem to think Windows Phone is a new thing from Microsoft, however in reality they've been creating mobile OS's for a long time. Apple just put the GSM module inside the PDA, made it look pretty and called it a smartphone. I never understood why Compaq/HP didn't do the same earlier, but I guess at the time most people just preferred to pair their PDA's with their phone instead. O2 tried it with their Xda, but it never really took off and in a twist of fate O2 were the ones who secured an exclusive UK contract to sell i-Phone's when they were first released (which obviously sold well), so it goes to show timing plays an important role.

As for price, I've just had a quick look on Amazon at new, unlocked, SIM-free Nokia Lumia's and you can buy a Lumia 520 for £97.99/$116.00, and a Lumia 620 for £135.60/$179.99. Don't seem particularly expensive to me, especially as a few years ago you'd pay more than that for a Symbian based non-smart phone.

My 8.1 updated to OneDrive yesterday so I don't have to wait until Patch Tuesday.;)

Oh? I just checked for updates and there wasn't one. I had a Flash Player update yesterday and the usual Defender ones. I thought we Americans came before the Brits, but I guess I'm mistaken. ;)

Did it update on your phone?

Didn't get it through Windows Update I just went to my SkyDrive online and it told me it was changing, can't remember if I had to click something or not but it showed as OneDrive when I left the site. Just looked at my phone, which is a Nokia Lumia 520 Black, and that's showing as OneDrive and I didn't do anything to that so it updated itself. ;)

I agree with this, both Microsoft and Nokia have solid roots in the enterprise space and have been around doing what they've been doing for quite a while. People think apple invented or coined the term "smartphone," but in reality, Microsoft had Windows Mobile for Smartphones well before the iphone was even conceived. And I bet the reason why most OEMs and mostly everyone didn't make a smartphone like apple is because at the time, a handheld computing device like that only was geared for two crowds of people: enterprise workers and tech enthusiasts. Everyone else didn't need one.

If you're in the US, you can get a Nokia Lumia 520 from Straight Talk Wireless for about 70 USD with a service plan of mostly unlimited everything for 45 USD per month prepaid.
