Test your AV program

I don't mind spending money either.
That's why I paid $19.99 for Avast. :)

Now that's a great deal. Good Job!

Something I should look at considering my 360 subscription is coming up in about a month.

Which Avast package are you running? I just looked at their site and I think I would need the Avast Internet Security and for 2 computers.

Time to start looking for discount codes:D

PS: My family is out of Winchester

Avast had a sale for $19.99 for 1 computer.
I'm glad I got it so cheap.
Unfortunately the sale is over. :(
Maybe you can find a promo code somewhere.

I have Avast Internet Security 2014.

I'm from New Market originally.

PS--- I used to be friends with a guy who's mother worked for the Cline family. They had a daughter named Patsy.

[Hi gator2013,

I alos have tested Norton 360 and I can confirm your findings that it does, in fact, pass all 5 tests! However, I think it all boils down to one's personal choice based on their own surfing habits. Now, in my case, I had a choice to use either the Norton 360 full version (provided free of charge by my ISP) or the Avast Free 2014. My personal reasoning for choosing Avast free over Norton 360 was based on the following experiences:

The Norton 360 auto updates failed too often (without resolve at that time). Also, it included too many options that I didn't need or want. Specifically, it offers too many total maintenance options that have nothing to do with protection IMHO. Yes, they can all be turned off, but I must admit that I had a bit of trouble getting everything properly set. So, my preference, for a program that only provides AV protection, led me back to the Avast Free offering. And just like you, I have never been infected by malware. Now, don't get me wrong, Avast tries to sell you (or install) some similar maintenance functions (eg, grimefighter, etc) but they all can be denied during the installation process. In summary, Norton 360 is a great product and it works well in protecting your PC; however, just because one pays for protection does not guarantee they are getting any better protection than certain free offerings. In summary, everyone needs to exhibit due dilligence when choosing their protection scheme and part of that (IMHO) is running it through some independent testing.

Thanks for your feedback,

Hello,

Sorry to hear that you had problems with updating your Norton product. Did you contact us to get that sorted out? :)

Norton 360 is basically an all-in-one product which offers AntiVirus, security, Backup and Tuneup feature. There are other products such as Norton Internet Security which come with only antivirus and Firewall.

If you ever plan to use a Norton product in future, please let me know. I can certainly help if there are any problems.

Thanks!

Hi Veneeth,

Yes, I did try to contact Norton support (at that time); however, when I saw hundreds of others reporting the exact same issue, I decided to wait a week to see if it got fixed. Anyway, according to Gator2013, all is well now.

Thanks for responding

Before I post my results; Is there a description of the tests’ protocols? I looked on the AMTSO site, but could not find them. There is this: AMTSO - FAQs - What Sort of testing is AMTSO looking at

I tried to keep this at a minimum. Airing out a few things, so I hope you don’t mind I get on my soap box.

I’ll open by stating that I very much dislike dealing with malware and AV products, including Defender. It gets worse every year. Heaven help those who write and administer malicious code, but sometimes I don’t know who’s worse > Them or the AV industry in general. To me it’s like one has to pick the lesser of all the evil with what seems to me deceit that goes on about which product is better than the other.

I’ve got to say I’m really leery once more of this AMTSO organization. Another non-for-profit org out to defeat evil. Ok. Sounds good, but someone has to pocket some money somewhere. You know > It’s like one of those non-for-profit donation orgs where the CEO makes $30MIL. :p Perhaps I’m a bit too pessimistic.

On their “About Us” page they give a physical address to c/o a rather large law firm out of San Francisco? This really threw up a red flag for me. What is that? > “Don’t you dare try to sue us if you have a problem!??? AMTSO - About Us

Ok. Let’s assume this is a legit organization that’s really trying to help conquer the evil.

There is no perfect AV. I think we can all agree on that. Actually we are our best defense against them by means of our surfing habits and knowledge of how they attack, such as email attachments, internet site pages (especially sexual subject), misleading browser links, and the like. Here’s just one good thread that encompasses practical guidance and solutions. I totally agree with the disk image solution at the end > Refresh/replace rather than detect/repair in extreme cases. BTW, Wolfgang’s ISO is still available for download. http://www.eightforums.com/system-security/19637-just-dealt-worst-malware-i-ve-ever-seen.html

I used MSE since introduction in September of 2009 while using W7 Pro. In the past 4 years I’ve gotten 2 viruses, of which Defender has caught and quarantined. I used to use SpyBot spyware (free edition) along with that scanning approximately once a month for spyware. Although a little leery of MSE’s effectiveness at first, what I liked about it was that it used far, far less resources while running in the background. I think I was using Norton before I switched. It was free via my ISP. It used far more resources, especially with Vista. I have not had a virus while using 8RP, 8, or since using 8.1 to date.

Anywho > For the real meat and potatoes for this thread. Defender only passed two tests on my machine. I got Defender Modern/Metro warning popups when files attempted to load during the first two tests, of which I didn’t allow download. The next 3 tests (with no warning popups) files got downloaded of which I allowed. I did a quick scan straightway and as you can see it detected and quarantined them.

Defender Quick Scan Snip.PNG

Defender Quick Scan Snip 2.PNG

One question I have > Is it fair to test Defender with these files since MS isn’t a “participating vendor”?

Vendor Participation
The way these tests work is really quite simple. Participating antivirus vendors just agree that they will configure their product to detect specific harmless files or Web pages the same way they would a malicious file. Fifteen major vendors have signed on so far, though not all of them support all of the feature checks. Tony Anscombe, AMTSO’s VP of Marketing, explained that “AMTSO expect more vendors will add detection of these tools to their solutions in the future.”

Obviously all the tests’ files were in Defender’s dictionary otherwise I wouldn’t have gotten the popups or that it found them. I see the last test failed and they embedded in my user files.

BTW, there’s some things I don’t like about Defender. The big one is that it’s not very configurable so far as its interface. E.g. I have change the argument in Defender scan properties within Task Scheduler to perform a full scan, not a quick scan, which just scans system files. I never understood why MS didn’t set up full scan as default. Don’t they care about personal files? http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/14264-windows-defender-scheduled-scan-set-up-windows-8-a.html

Perhaps I have to rethink Defender, perhaps not. Bottom line with them all > I think we all still wonder what sits on our machines even if we have AV.

One question I have > Is it fair to test Defender with these files since MS isn’t a “participating vendor”?

Hi Tony,

No, it is not a fair comparison and I wouldn't expect defender to pass those last three tests either. Also, keep in mind that many of those participating vendors only offer to meet those testing standards in their "paid versions." That's why I was so surprised to see that Avast 2014 Free passed all 5 tests. This tells me that Avast has included heuristic and intelligent scanning technologies into their free version (and so has Panda Free Cloud to a certain extent) where many others only reserve those features for their full versions of software. This was quite evident when I tested bitdefender (full version) against bitdefender free awhile back. Now, if you dig into the specs for both, you'll see the difference in the technologies being used. Specifically, bitdefender free seems to want to run continuously in the background (during idle cpu times); whereas, the paid version does not have to do that... and neither does Avast BTW. Now, don't get me wrong. Bitdefender free is a great product; however, its continual need to run in the background was a real turn-off for me.

Cheer friend!

No silly "test" like this is going to make me switch from Defender. Defender passed #1, #2 passed, #3 most of the time aren't threats, #4 is handled by Firefox, #5 is not applicable.

Thanks for the info and insight. I may switch. I'll have to chew on it awhile.

So what bothers me is a few days back I bought Avast Internet Security and Malwarebytes Pro which came to a grand total of $44.95. The wife and I were walking around Walmart and I passed by the software section and was looking at AV on the shelves and almost everyone of them was $40 or more. Wish more people would understand shopping online is the way to go and not to mention I have read that Avast typically has a higher detection rate then store sold AV's.
