So many metro games crash, screen res or graphics driver issue?

In all honesty - can I be frank with you here - I'm not entirely confident in the design of the machine. I just watched a little bit of a YouTube video of it, and I don't see any type of vent at all. And it is very thin. Just by looking at it in the video I can see it getting hot (no, not for real but what I mean is getting through).

Plus, the maker is no longer in business or something to that effect. It could be related to lots of problems for all we know.

You can humor me here by trying something. At least it can rule out or in with this process. Go in the device manager. Right click on the (or all if > 1) Bluetooth entry(ies) and disable it/them.

Do the same exact thing for the Marvell network.

Reboot and test. If it crashes, post the crash dump so I can verify that all running drivers are well.

I'll work on figuring out how to do the optimized defaults thing next.

Your system does not need this, so we can get rid of it.

Install the trial of Dameware. Open up Dameware NT Utilites (not mini remote).

See your machine in the left side. If it is not there, add 127.0.0.1 to the favorites.

Then go to services | remove service. Check the box to show drivers also. Then look for Intel Graphics service or similar. Uninstall it then reboot.

I installed NT Utilities and looked for the Intel Graphics service like you said, but I didn't see anything on the list that I was sure would be what you meant. Here's a screenshot of the Intel stuff.
I read the rest of the list looking for any kind of graphics service but didn't see anything else.

It's true, there are no vents. No fan either. I've taken the battery out like you said.

I installed NT Utilities and looked for the Intel Graphics service like you said, but I didn't see anything on the list that I was sure would be what you meant.

OH! SO CLOSE! I uninstalled IGD, rebooted, and then couldn't cause a bluescren (Hurray!). But, it disabled the GMA500 driver and sent my screen to a messed up skewed resolution (1024/786ish). Reinstalled GMA500 driver to fix resolution and BSOD came back.
I think you've found the problem! Congratulations!

Now what do we do about it?

Sheesh, I just had a real forehead-slapping moment.

A few of the latest drivers I've tried to install have given me an error that read "This operating system is not supported, setup will exit."

I totally knew this somewhere in my subconscious but it only just surfaced: To get these drivers to work, right click, go to properties, compatibility tap, run in compatibility mode, dropdown: windows 7.

Compatibility mode! Sheesh.

Have you ran it open with a room fan blowing on it to test yet, as previously advised?

Ok, I took out the battery and cover, placed the notebook on a room fan and let it cool down for a few minutes, and then ran hivemind: BSOD, and ran performance analysis: BSOD
This is totally subjective, but I feel like hivemind may have run for an extra second or so.


Would just the gma500 driver cause it to overheat?

By the looks and feeling of things, there is definitely something wrong with the machine.

2 things to recommend here: Set Optimized Defaults in the bios if not yet done so. Finding an update and installing, if possible, can only help.

Clean install Windows 8 while offline and do not allow it online in any way. Have the GMA 500 driver ready on a USB stick or CD/DVD ready to install. Do so once at desktop then reboot and test.

If it crashes like this, then the machine is defective.

I set optimal defaults and launched hivemind -- it took considerably longer for hivemind to cause a BSOD -- probably around 40 seconds

For viliv users: To access the bios settings on a viliv, restart the machine, then press del key continually as soon as it's reloaded (the gray viliv screen)

Next stop: Clean restart!

About to do a clean install of win8, one question though.

When we first ran the crash dumps you told me that I had atom io control installed and that I don't need it. But on all of the viliv forums, they say to install atom IO control before any other driver and then reboot.

The question is, should I install atom IO control like they say on the viliv forums, and then install GMA 500, or should I just

If it crashes like this, then the machine is defective.

Ran a clean install ofline. Used a usb key to install gma 500. Restarted. Launched the performance assessment. BSOD

Looks like my machine is defective. I found a site that claims there's a bios update available for my computer, I'll try to grab that and install, if it still does the bs thing, then I guess I'll just count my lucky stars that I've only found to processes that cause it.
