No way will PC's die and be replaced by tablets

$3,900 mobo, $6,900 Graphics Card, and joke...

A quick search found a $3,900 mobo and a $6,900 graphics card.

But grandpa 4k memory machines aren't possible, because you would never be able to do 3d (not stereo graphic) retinal holographic simulations with light radiance, sound, touch, wind, smell, and heat on anything less than a 200 ExaHertz CPU, 512 Zettabytes of RAM, 256 yottabytes of diskspace desktop.

Have fun.

Is it even possible to spend $4000. building a desktop...?? :)
You can. We spent around that much building a Six Core Xenon CPU based server for use at our church for desktop video production. It is used during services for placing media up on four projectors. Along with serving video distribution out to 12 HDTV LCD's through out the church.

The two video cards alone were around $500 a piece for dual video output. One output for each monitor, at the workstation are two monitors, the other two feed the hdmi distribution & the projectors.

I guess there are many ways to spread the gospel. I have never seen such an elaborate setup as bro23 described - and that is in the big European cathedrals that hold thousands of people.

This is my favorite cathedral, actually called basilica, the Basilique St Nicolas de Port near Nancy in Lorraine. It was built in flamboyant gothic style and is in excellent condition due to a 10 Million Dollar donation from a former resident of the town. This is not a very big cathedral, but unique in it's style.

quite frankly I have worked at the church for 24 years ,but I don't believe in god .so for me its just a job ,where I for the most part choose my own hrs ,so I hade some freedom lol but I do like church/ cathedral history and architecture

Churches are not all frugal. We go to a non denominational megachurch, and here is a very short clip from our recent Easter service. http://youtu.be/uIK32NpwRaE. We utilize a lot of high end audio/video/lighting technology. It's basically a full concert light rig system, we use L-acoustics line array speaker systems, and we have pyrotechnics. We do satellite video feeds to 2 other local locations and we have a broadcast studio where the services are broadcasted online. I volunteer here doing audio mixing for the band.

A lot of money here is put into technology, but we also raise money for hospitals in Zambia, we sponsor over 4000 kids in Africa, we collect food and supplies for children who have been orphaned, we have food drives and recently packed 2 million meals in a single weekend with 10,000 volunteers from the church. We give back a ton

Most of our churches in my area that are Christian, Baptist, Methodist pparks1, run large a/v systems. The largest charity is MyHope Web :: Home for the Christian churches in my town. I just got done working on a laptop that will be heading to the school in Yangon on May 5th, that the couple that runs the charity had me overhaul for the pastor over there.

Brand new 240 GB M500 SSD in a Dell Inspiron N7010. Mainly going to be used in the school. Runs like a champ after I cleaned out all of the dust from the heat sink, and changed the old platter drive to the SSD. My wife & I sponsor a girl in the 8th grad at the school.

The plus thing is that it is what I do for a living, and it is helping out something that we have a hand in helping someone else. I did it as charity work. Our church we have donated close to $10,000.00 in A/V gear and Computer equipment for the Worship arts Interns to have workstations at the church.

Hi there.

Ever heard of a place called "The Vatican" --- not the most poverty stricken city on the planet !!!!.

Actually if this particular church in providing this type of service is obviously supported by its congregation then I can't see anything wrong with it.

In Whatever activity of life we participate in I'm sure there's ALWAYS people who say "Couldn't the money be better spent elsewhere". The answer to that question though isn't as simple as it sounds -- even if there were one.

It could be that ONE single person watching the video service from that particular church might well have been persuaded NOT to commit some really nasty crime -- we'll never know - but it's possible. So is the Video worthwhile - probably yes.

(Similarly you don't know if the dollar or so you gave to a "Panhandler" under say a Texas Freeway onramp will go towards buying a Gun or Drugs - leading to more Crime -- so we can never know outcomes of "Is the money being wisely used" in these cases. Obvious waste can always be seen - but that's a totally different story).

In any case a lot of Church organisations are HUGE consumers of quite advanced I.T technology and hardware.

(@the Churchgoers -- most of these organisations provide Huge amounts in aid relief in 3rd world etc even though it might seem that they are spending a lot on modern computer hardware. -- I'm not religious myself but have nothing against these types of activities provided they are kept in check and not forced down people's throats --I tend to support "The Salvation Army" -- you only have to be in a Cold country in Winter to see some of the work these people do with folk that have for one way or another hit hard times).

If you like any sort of Classical music then Churches in their history have provided endless sources of great music -- and theatre of a high order -- try the two Reqiuem masses -- VERDI's REQUIEM and Grande Messe de Morts by Hector Berlioz for starters - even if you are a total non believer you can't fail to be moved by these works. Here's the Sanctus from the Grande Messe des Morts -- skip the 5 sec ad on You tube. Enjoy !!!

IF people were converting video files, which most don't for sure hence why laptops are the norm of computing to be supplemented or superseded by tablets, most likely of which will be Intel/AMD based.

They do make i7 powered tablets as well as ones with mobile GPUs. This is quite common for laptops. Most people with what's considered high end for laptops don't ever come to understand how a proper ATX system can outperform their laptop. They don't because they'd rather have something powerful yet mobile.

Well, no.

I have a very powerful high-end laptop, and yes, I bought it because I wanted a powerful yet mobile (when needed) machine. Although at 17.3 x 11.6 x 1.6 inches and 10.3 lbs with AC adapter, it's not used as a portable that often (I have a smaller Core 2 Duo laptop for that, running Windows 7).
However, I am more than aware of the difference between it and a 'big' desktop. But I'm prepared to make that trade-off as an experienced and informed very-long-term user, not because I 'don't understand'. I ran desktops exclusively until 2009, and still have a very tricked-up Hyperthreaded P4 I built a few years ago, for some of my older OSes and programs, and for running the printer/scanner etc.

And no, a tablet simply doesn't cut it, I have one and find I'm using it less and less, not more.

Wenda.

Test projector in appropriate lighting conditions.

I coordinate the 7 volunteers for audio-visual at a 200 member church with 2 volunteers each week. One of our members performs computer repair and put together 3 PCs, a mixer, a video switch and 2 projectors. We once were too cheap (frugal), and the projector was not powerful enough for the lighting conditions so after a few months a more powerful projector was purchased.

So test a projector with your worst case lighting conditions and the persons with the best and poorest eyesight before purchasing.

We have collected PC's for tutoring 6th-8th graders. Some PC's are loaned out or given to children to take home. 11 years ago, when my daughter was 5, she came home from school and said she was important, because she was the official computer helper. About 1/3 of the kindergarten children had never seen a mouse. So the teacher had her assist the children, but she could only give them hints and not the answers. So, I encourage people to investigate preschools, schools, charitable organizations, churches, when upgrading their equipment.

Hi there

@"Wenda

--Yes I only really tried a tablet for some email and reading -- however a tablet is 100% RUBBISH when it comes to reading in bright light -- I've gone back to my (black and white) e-reader -- while looking much more @old fashioned@ it's the best tool BY FAR for mobile reading and with the nice new Samsung S5 I can do the small amounts of email I want to do and any amount of video "chat / social networking" that I need or want to. I need a laptop for work and at home I really WANT a new desktop type of machine - i'm messing around with HUGE video / other multi media files and could do with a DUAL (or better) PROCESSOR machine - not simply a single multi-core processsor. No way in a tablet would one of these appear. !! It also has to drive SEVERAL very large monitors too.

The tablet I've given away to a friend's young son -- it was far too limiting a device for me which really wasn't portable enough (compared with a phone) and not good enough for using in bright light for reading etc.

Cheers
