Solved No System Restore points

My restore points don't get deleted when switching back and forth between startup in Windows 7 and Windows 8.

This is how I have mine set.

In Windows 7, system protection turned on for Windows 7 drive, but off for Windows 8 drive.

In Windows 8, system protection turned on for Windows 8 drive, but off for Windows 7 drive.
I have no option in Windows 7 for the Windows 8 OS. In fact, in W7 Explorer does not show the W8 OS at all. However, Explorer in W8 shows the W7 OS.

How did you setup and do your dual boot with them?

Did you have both drives connected when installing the last OS?

Hiya Shawn,

I think that may be it.

Don't try and make shadow copies of the other os partition.

Seems to be working - I haven't rebooted yet - so can't be sure they will stick.

I can't think why it would have that effect. Odd.

Windows 7 was installed by me. I created free space next to W7 then installed W8 next to W7.

My only guess is the new "Metro" UI in Windows 8 is causing an issue if you have system protection turned on in Windows 7 for Windows 8 or vice versa instead of only in their own. Time will tell.

Did you do anything that would hide Windows 8 from Windows 7 inside Windows 7?

I think I resolved this, but won't know for sure until tomorrow. Here is what I did using the XP to Vista model (the key, as far as I can tell is to do this in W7 and to identify the partition W8 is located. I have been flipping back and forth between W7 & W8 and have yet to have my restore points deleted in W8. I will shut down my desktop tonight and see if this really is a fix or just smoke and mirrors!

That didn't work. When I booted Win 7, the Win 8 restore points were deleted. I created a new SR point in Win 7 and now that I'm back in Win 8, it shows 100MB+ being used on the Win 7 drive (I:) for SR so maybe it will work.

I did just notice that the space allocated on my C: drive was set to 0, no idea how or why but I moved it up to 2% so will try Win 7 again nwo and see what happens. I may have something still setup wrong there too.

Mines set the same as yours Shawn, but after it 'broke' once, I reset and configured again.

Now it only saves a RP if I create one.

It seems to go awry after going into 7 (which works normally) and then back into 8.

I also echo the frustrated sentiments at MS 'one OS only' policy. Even when you have two bloody versions of Windows, they still fight each other about permissions etc. PITA.

Shawn, do you have Win 7 and Win 8 on separate drives. My dual boot is on the same same drive just different partitions and have it set the same as yours but still loose the win8 restore points.

OK Thanks Guys, I'm having this problem in windows 8 also ( No auto restore points).
I have 5 HDD's, one with Win 8 installed & two with Win 7. The other two are storage & backup drives.
I have also noticed on my system that even if I create four restore points manually, Win 8 will only keep the first one after I reboot into Win 8.
So, in the above explanation (the fix outlined in the link posted above by "Slopechz") that I should just replace the references to the XP installation as being Win 7, is that correct.

Hello BongoKongo,

If that is what your issue is, then yes using the tutorial in that post above substituting XP for W7 instead to hide W8 and W7 from each other. :)

The only issue with Windows 8 is that it does not create restore points automatically. Of course Microsoft has no answers.

I have had problems with the win 8 task scheduler not working for anything at all since day one.
Everything looked OK, no files where corrupt & no system file where missing, the schedules where correctly setup & there where never any errors saying that a task had-not or could not be run.
I just couldn't work out what was going on because everything seemed to be setup & running correctly, but in reality the dam thing just would not run any task on a schedule,,ever.

So after Googling & asking for help on many forums I decided to ask M/Soft for help only to find out that they didn't really know why it was happening either. Their only real answer was that it may be happening because I had multiple HDD's installed. From what I can make out I'm not the only one with this problem either.
So, I was just about ready to Give up & reinstall the dam OS for the third time, but at the last minute I decided not to because it didn't fix the problem before (twice).

Anyway I did some searching in the Task scheduler looking for,, well,, something, anything that was causing it not to run.
Then I clicked on "The Task Scheduler Library" Folder in the Top Left column. It brings up two entries in the right column named: Optimize Start Menue Cache files. So I clicked on properties & checked under all the Task tabs & everything looked fine. But in the "Conditions" I noticed that the "Start the Task only if the Computer is Idle" check box was ticked but the "Wait for Idle" setting was wrongly set. It was set to run from "0 to 1 hour", but the problem is that it has to be set at a number greater than "0" or it wont run. Even if you just change the "0" to "1" it will work & once you have done that the task scheduler will work properly again. It Fixed the problem with system Restore refusing to do Auto backups as well.
You can even un-check the box: "Start the Task only if the Computer is Idle" after you change the above setting if you like.

Anyway,, for some reason it doesn't matter how many times I install windows 8 this setting in "Optimize Start menu Cache Files" is always configured wrongly from the outset. If it has a "0" as the start time like mine did, the Task scheduler won't ever run Scheduled tasks no matter what you do.

Hope this helps anyone having this issue.

I'm confused. Does this fix the automatic System Restore issue?

Hi,
Well, it has worked for me ,,So far, but you never know what is going to happen next with this OS.
SR has been working fine for just over 1 week & I have been able to set it up to do an Auto backup when I uninstall programs & also when the system boots up.
But if you have win 7 installed too you will have to do the "Slopchez" tweak as well otherwise you will loose all of your system restore points every time you boot into Win 7.
