Solved New BSOD

There are limitations to the built-in memory diagnostic that I read about long ago. Since then I've preferred MemTest86+ - but even that isn't 100% reliable.
Yes, I do also use Memtest86+, specially when I buy new memory sticks, always run the test to make sure I have good sticks since I only have a 30 day to RMA if they are bad, and thank you John for clarifying this.

@turboman,
If you are going to replace the bad stick, make sure to replace with the same brand to avoid timing issue.

hello topgun,
I wish now that would have followed your advice. At that time, being a nonexpert, it seemed easier to use the built-in memory diagnostic, rather than downloading software and burning bootdisks (also because I did not have a second PC or laptop then. Now I have).

Memory is not that expensive for my 2 x 4GB. So I am thinking of buying a set anyway.
I also want to buy different memory. Originally I bought a Corsair which said it has 1600speed. But afterwards I found out it runs at 1333 because SPD is 1333. It has 1600 in XMP but that requires changing Bios settings, which I want to avoid. I read that my CPU should be 1600 capable, so I am looking now for memory with 1600 in SPD.
Any comments?

(I know this does not really belong in the BSOD section. I expect that we can close this thread soon when I confirm all is well with new memory).

I read somewhere that 1600 SPD modules do exist but they only come with 4GB per DIMM.

hello topgun
Found a reference on website hardwareluxx on Crucial Ballistix Sports RAM with minimum SPD 1600. I bought that today and am now running memtest86+ (so far so good). Memtest shows 800MHz, but I did not check the speed in Bios. But memtest seems to indicate speed is 1600.
I am happy with that. Most RAM seems to be basic SPD 1333 and as I read somewhere that current Intel Ivy bridge is standard 1600, I am happy to get 1600 now without tweaking.
OK, this is a BSOD thread , so back to BSOD. After the memtest, I will make a clean Windows 8 install and report back.

New BSOD crash with new memory and new Win 8 install!

Previously I found bad memory with memtest86+.
I bought a new set of memory and testet it with memtest86+ for 13hrs, with in total 13 passes. Everything OK.

Then I made a new clean install of Win 8 PRO 64bit.
After the install, I updated Windows until there were no updates left. I have not updated drivers yet. So at this stage I suppose all drivers are from Win 8.
(I saw this recommendation to update Windows before installing drivers:
http://www.eightforums.com/hardware-drivers/16988-drivers-install.html

After that I shutdown the PC last night. This morning I wanted to continue with installing drivers, but before I started, I got this crash -> see result of SF Diagnostic Tool.
The crash message was page-fault-in-nonpaged-area.

What to do?

Still suggestive of hardware IMO.

Have you:
- updated the firmware on the SSD?
- performed the free diagnostics that I suggested previously: Hardware Diagnostics ?

hello John
SSD firmware is uptodate.
Memtest86+ does not show any errors.

I ran Seatools. It could not find a drive and it could not find a controller. But Win 8 was installed and could run normally. Intel Chipset software utility and chipset driver were also installed.

What shall I do next?

Go to the Seagate website and get Seatools for Windows - and run it within Windows to see what it says.

Then wait and see if the problems return........

hello John

Thanks for the extraordinary strong support!
Things are looking better now, but I do not know if I am out of the woods.
There are 2 new factors:
1) I found that the Samsung SSD support software had an option of Secure Erase. I applied that and then made a new clean Windows install.
2) I was in contact with Asus about the right procedure for installing drivers. They told me to use the DVD supplied with the motherboard. Eventually I found out that the DVD supplied with my motherboard was wrong. The DVD did not support Win 8. I went back to the shop and got a correct Win 8 support DVD.
I now applied Secure Erase, then made a new clean install. Then installed the drivers from the correct support DVD. So far so good. Next step is Windows Update.
I have not done Windows Update yet. But before, I never got to this stage, so I am confident now. I will report back after I made the Windows update and when I feel things are going OK.

In detail, I made the following steps:
- Make a bootable CD/DVD for Samsung Secure Erase (freedos).
- Boot with this CD/DVD.
- Message appears that SSD drive is in frozen state. Instructs to disconnect SATA power and reconnect. Then run command SEGUI0.exe.
- Followed those instructions, then I could make a secure erase of the SSD.
- Clean install Win 8 PRO 64bit, only SSD connected.
- Make internet connection.
- Activate Windows.
- Turn of automatic updates for Windows (I did not want updates mixing up with driver installation).
- Run Asus support disk for Win 8. With the new correct disk, no problems.
- Install all drivers I could find. No problems during installation.
- Connect 1 harddisk for data, and 1 harddisk for backup.
- Make image of SSD.

That is the status now. And so far everything OK. Because of the past problems, every time I do something, I fear a BSOD. But nothing happened.

Next step is Windows update.

Question: do you still think I should run Seatools? (when everything is going OK now, I don't want to mess up things. I am getting maybe paranoid).

hello John
Still looking good. So far I have done:
- Install Win8 and install drivers.
- Update Windows 8.
- Install Office 2010.
After each step, I made an image of the SSD, so I can go back.
So far , everything is working OK. I will wait for a few days, and if there are no further crashes, I will mark this case as resolved.

Thanks for the support.

I have waited a few days, and still no BSOD's. So I will mark this thread as solved.
In conclusions, the crashes were caused by:
- defective RAM
- either or both of the following: a) not doing a secure erase of the SSD before a new clean install, and b) doing the mainboard driver installation wrong.
- Drivers from Asus asusfilter.sys and from Corsair link might have contributed to the crashes. After the latest clean install, I did not install Asus and Corsair software anymore.

Thanks John, topgun and bagavan for the help. Without that, I could not have done it.
