Microsoft may release Office 2013 public preview today

Microsoft may announce the first public preview of Office 2013, the likely name for its next productivity suite, at its annual gathering with partners later today.

Although Microsoft has not publicly revealed its plans for Office 2013 -- which has been codenamed "Office 15" -- other than to say that a public beta would be rolled out "later this summer," there are clues that the company will unveil a sneak peek today.

I signed in with my Windows live ID and got my serial. Downloaded the 32 and 64 bit versions. Installed the 64 bit and launched Outlook. Never did get asked to enter my key? Had to go to the File tab > Office Account > Product information section to enter it. Weird that it didn't ask for it during the install? I uninstalled Office 2010 before hand and it found all my info, didn't have to set anything up in Outlook 2013. :thumb:

Sounds like too much 'cloud' rubbish for me.

And I don't like having to sign-in to MS to access files etc.

Will probably stick with Office 2010.

2013 has some nice new features, but, like Win 8, has nothing I
can't live without, and much that I can.

I HATE this push to the cloud, and actively avoid having anything
to do with it.

Kat if you install using the full installer & key in Brinks post you will be able to save your documents to your computer.

Oh wow! I love and enjoy the new metro design, SO COOL! Not only that, it might also be a preview of what the new metro Desktop will be in the RTM of Windows 8. If Office 2013 is built for Windows 8 and Windows 8 is built for Office 2013, it done be good!

Ok, just installed 2013

I am not disappointed except that it is blindingly white.
I have not activated, and have no trouble saving docs wherever I wish.

There is a kind of "In Your Face" feel to it though, which I don't like.
Possibly due to the blinding whiteness of it. It really does need to be toned WAY down.

It will take some getting used to, so I will reserve full judgment till later.

And I do believe that the only reason it is synching with Cloud (and only if I save stuff there) stuff is I have Win8 logged in with my Live ID.
You can setup an account in Win8 without a live id, I have not done that fully yet and used all the features to see what works and what doesn't.

I'm having a fantastic time with Outlook! It is everything I wanted it to be! YES!

I have Outlook almost successfully configured with 2 different clients, my local ISP - E mail account of which Outlook receives mail from it's Inbox folder only and the other account is an Yahoo account which Outlook receives combined mail from it's Inbox & Spam folders.

In Outlook there is mail in the Inbox folder only for both accounts.

I haven't figured out how to add other folders such as "Past E Mails" that exist in both clients. I swear when I tested the Office 2010 beta that all of the folders of my E Mail providers were automatically added to Outlook or could be manually added.

Outlook 2013 imported all my folders, contacts, rules, saved mail, etc from office 2010. I had exported my PST file and rules before uninstalling office 2010 just in case. Office 2010 saved them to Documents > Outlook files folder. Office 2013 must have located them there.

Anybody know how to make the ribbon stay minimized? I minimize it but as soon as I open the next email it down again.

Nothing in it for me, and checked with my guy at Microsoft, you'll be working for FREE (Beta Testing) Absolutely nothing will be given outside of a 30 (count them) day account online, using Office 2013 after beta testing completes. So here's the question: can I use it without it trying to link everything to online (aka "cloud") storage? Does it run locally on my machine or is it somehow linked to an online account and forcing me to go through that just to get to it?

From the promotional blurbs I have seen on the Office site I'm not very enthused about yet another push to put stuff in the cloud just because it's the "cool" thing to do.

It is LINKED directly to your email address in the clouds, as with Office 2010 was/is. BUT during the save, you have an option to save it to the Cloud, and locally onto your PC as well. BUT when you fire it up locally, it will have you switch to the online version. BUT the cloud allows you to make a nice hard copy of whatever you are doing (I.E. Word, Excel, etc.) From looking it over, there is really nothing in it for me. 2010 handles my business good enough. Oh yeah IMPORTANT! You to keep the cloud have to pay an annual fee. If the fee isn't paid within 30 days, your account becomes delinquent, and you get a 10 day notice to pay, or you cloud clears up, and all your files, etc. go bye. NOT kidding.

I do believe Office 365 is the cloud based Office suite. The version being discussed in this thread should run locally just like Office 2007 or office 2020 did. I'm using the same pop3 email account I used before and my email gets downloaded and saved locally in a folder on my PC. That's the way it looks to me, I've only been using it for a day or so.

Well, you are paying for Technet, so not really getting this copy of office for "free".

Technet subscriptions are a great way to get a ton of software for a very cheap price. I'm still unsure why technet doesn't cost at least $750.
