Microsoft mulling 128-bit versions of Windows 8, Windows 9

Microsoft is working on 128-bit architecture compatibility with the Windows 8 and Windows 9 kernels. Consequently, the company is also forming relationships with major partners, including Intel, AMD, HP, and IBM.

I fully agree with Lee. It would be a giant leap to go now, with the next version of Windows, to 128-bit.

ehhh i think it's possible although unlikely 128 bit support will show up in 8, at least with the initial launch. but i wouldn't be surprised to see it in 9 or whatever they call it. however it really is time to kill 32 bit support.

The bottom line here is that someone from another forum is alleged to have created a fake LinkedIn profile of a made-up MS employee, which they then promised to interview and post, in order to create traffic. Unethical to say the least. Who can believe anything posted there now? There never was any 128 bit planning for the next Windows. It was all a bunch of bull.

I really think Microsoft leaves it to Virtual PC to handle 32-bit apps.

You are right, of course. But someday, somehow we (and those Fortune 500 companies) have to start thinking about the future. All new hardware is 64-bit, software development is going on that direction. Is it Win8 or Win9, I'm not sure though I think it's already Win8, we have to move to a 64-bit environment.

As in any other major change in global IT policy, some will be hurt. But the change is coming, and I think it should come.

As we’ve known for some time, Microsoft had already begun work on Windows 8 before Windows 7 was completed. The reason being that different teams work on different aspects of the operating system, which is why Microsoft was able to do this. Microsoft previously shed some light on what we can see in Windows 8 through a job description.

It appears though, that one specific Microsoft employee was not too careful with their LinkedIn profile, and had accidentally leaked some interesting details regarding Windows 8. According to his LinkedIn profile, which seems to have had many of its details removed, Robert Murdon has been working at Microsoft since January 2002. Windows 8 News managed to catch this on the Microsoft employee’s LinkedIn profile before it disappeared:

“Robert Morgan is working to get IA-128 working backwards with full binary compatibility on the existing IA-64 instructions in the hardware simulation to work for Windows 8 and definitely Windows 9.”

“Robert Morgan is using Hestia (custom software package) for experimenting with the processor for scientific analysis and 3D graphics. Error: Memory Latency? Always gotta be a challenge barrier, it’s gotta be a bug in Hestia. right?!”

“Robert Morgan is frustrated with process standards and regulations! Delays Delays!”

I am so sorry, my friend and I hope you will not be offended. But I am familiar with the supposed Microsoft employee Robert Morgan story, and how it started. The owners of a forum on Windows topics had allegedly created the LinkIn employee profile and then claimed credit for breaking the news story. That web site with its forum is now gone. It does not exist anymore.

The truth is there is no evidence Microsoft intends to release dedicated 128-bit software anytime soon. As many here have noted, the public has not yet accepted 64-bit software as a standard. We all will have to wait and see how this plays out.

We have silly people complaining that Windows 7 doesn't run 16 Bit programs (window 7 and 16 bit programs :: freedomlist.com).

After the fury about drivers and compatibility when Windows Vista was released, I cannot see the next OS abandoning 32-bit yet but do expect much stronger support for 64-bit, as required for earning the Windows 7 compatibility logo. Unless we start seeing vendors getting ready to support 128-bit, I wouldn't expect to see it in the next Windows OS.

I've personally seen 8 bit --> 16 bit --> 32 bit --> 64 bit... The progression is predictable and speeding up as is Moore's Law!
