I did the same, I am unable to activate 8.1 with my 8 key, but this trick worked on multiple PCs.

when I first upgraded to win 8.1 it was thanks to an email from MS with a key code. I have just returned to 8.1 from 8 after some problems a few weeks ago and this time no code was required. The ISO was via a skype ad mentioned elsewhere.
