Solved Is anyone on here happy with windows 8?

I like Windows 8. You get two systems in one - how much better could it get. Would I pay money for it - probably not. There is not enough new function to warrent an extra expense. And the performance difference I do not really see on the SSD.

Yes! I am happy with Windows 8. I'm a semi-power user developing and maintaining websites for non-profit organizations. Needless to say I live on the desktop which can be configured pretty much the same as I've done for Windows 7. There is no Quick Launch however "pin to task bar" does the same thing and there's lots of room if you use small icons. As for the lack of a Start button/menu, it turns out the Start screen and Apps screen do the same thing and are easier to use. Of course you have to configure the Start screen to provide all the links you previously used in XP or Win7; its easy to do. You can ignore the Metro apps or not. Perhaps the release version will have some you would like to use. Will I pay for an upgrade to Windows 8. At the moment I would say no but I'm using it every day, maybe I'll find something, or Microsoft will add something, that makes an upgrade worth the expense. I certainly will have no problem moving to a new computer running Windows 8.

i need to get away!!! im going back to windows 95!!!!!

I do have an unopened copy of MSDOS 6 if you need it :) I even have an IBM PC (256K RAM, wow) that might run it if a monitor would be happy with its VGA output. I should have kept my first computer a TRS Model III, 64K RAM running CP/M.

i was looking around and reading what people have been saying and it would seem noone here like windows 8 at all.

Pros:

- Feels a bit faster (not sure though).
- Some good new features

Cons:

- A lot of extremely annoying changes and new silly features (I hate the charms badly, argh, so irritating everytime it shows up accidentally)
- Metro who? (you hate it the first days, the you ignore it completely)

I can't help to stay always with the last versions. I will not go back.

Do I like W8 then? No, Windows 7 was just fine and without annoyances, but... I am a last version addict

Hi,

True.
Yet I'd still like to see W8 sans Metro and with everything W7 has for the simple reason that it seems faster and it is more efficient memory wise and real estate wise so to speak.

I do wonder what's that swapfile is for though....

Cheers, ;)

For me, the only 'new' features of significant interest are, Hyper-V and Storage Spaces, both of which I'll probably deploy on a single PC, probably using Server 8. The start-up and shut-down times are really neither here or there, as I seldom turn off any of my systems.

I do wonder what's that swapfile is for though

The general consensus is that it's related to the hybrid sleep function, although there also some discussion about it being used in suspending Metro applications.

Two features that are worth keeping an eye on areThe Windows 8 Kill Switch and UEFI Regardless of what Microsoft say now, there's plenty of room for abuse with both of these features.

Not happy at all, I can see why Windows Phones are losing marketshare. The OS runs fine but the UI is like playing a rubik's cube, average folks do not like this unnatural and mechanical tile design UI.

Aside from my initial reservations about the Start screen, etc., which I still hold, except for a few glitches that could be attributed to drivers in Beta, WIN 8 has proven to be extremely solid, fast and fluid on my PC. I don't care for tablets and will never own one. But I intend on having Win 8 as the OS in my machine from now on.

So, to comment on the initial observations on this thread, I like the developments in WIN 8.

Well I've had Windows 8: CP for a few weeks now and it's been a love/hate relationship, but yes I am happy with Windows 8. It's been a bumpy ride but now that I've gotten used to it and mastered the OS, I like it better than Windows 7 even though Microsoft needs to work on it a lot more before release.

What I like about it:

1. Windows Explorer Upgrades: This includes the Ribbon and ISO Mounting, both very useful features

2. Upgraded Task Manager: Makes it a lot cleaner and easier to use

3. Upgraded Windows PowerShell: Always A Good Thing...

4. Ability to sign in with a Microsoft ID: Makes things more connected and I like that

5. New Lock Screen: I used to never use the Lock feature and now I do all the time

6. Various New Metro and Non-Metro apps: Some great new apps to be had, my favorite being the XBOX LIVE app since I'm a huge gamer

7. Visual Login: That's just awesome...

8. General Performance: MUCH faster than Windows 7 for me

What I don't like about it:

1. WDDM 1.2: Great idea but it needs a lot of tweaking for legacy apps and drivers

2. Metro IE: What the f***? If I want a Cell Phone Browser I'll pick up my phone. Why would you not include plug-ins?!?!?!?!?

3. Secure Boot: A Dirty Monopolistic thing to do...

4. Windows Defender: Much more intrusive than MSE in my opinion

5. Lack of Simple, Easy to get too Shut Down, Restart and like shortcuts: I don't like pressing Control Alt Delete every time I want to Log Off, and yeah I know other ways are there, but it's too complicated for such simple processes

There are many ways to do this. See Shawn's tutorial and also the related tutorials on the bottom. I have put a 'switch' into the taskbar and on the start menu.

My two-bob's-worth.....

I've set it up to boot through Metro to the desktop, and activated the Start Menu and
Quick-Launch, as well as the routine tweaks I always perform on a fresh installation.

Set-up like this, I quite like it, apart from a few minor niggles.

But, like Calico, I'm not at all happy about the 'kill-switch' and am certainly not happy
with the idea of UEFI. Unless they can be easily disabled/bypassed, I want neither any-
where near my systems.

And I want my files, progs and apps on MY HDD, not on someone else's server (cloud).

If I don't get the choice, I'll be staying with 7 or going open-source.
