I really enjoy Windows 8

Depending on how you have Control Panel viewed....
Drop to bottom right corner, click on settings, click on Control Panel, click on System and Security, then/or Click on Administrative Tools
Double Click on Resource Monitor.

But, because it is an Administrative Tool, it is not visible by default from the start screen.
So, you do have to enable that from the start screen settings.
But, again, the Control Panel has not changed from 7, so everything is there as it was in 7.
And it is as easy to get at as it was in 7, just in a different location.

As with Office and the Ribbon Bars, if people would take the time to learn how to use Win8,
they would find that it is actually easier to use than the old start button.
It is a lot easier to search and find things than it has ever been.

I have classic shell, but honestly, I rarely ever use it.

I want to see other changes to the GUI and the OS in general
I do want to see the start screen, sort of go away, but not entirely, it has it's advantages. they aren't completely trivial either
And the start screen is very usable on all systems.

I want the Modern Apps to run Windowed from the desktop, with the ability to gadgetize some of them.
I want to see more done with Homegroups.
More cross platform apps with local network sych compatibility, or over cellular
But not from someone else's basement server, or some cloud service.

For the life of me, I don't know why we are not getting that level of Apps in Windows in general, regardless if it is 7 or 8
It's a nobrainer to me.

I used an easier approach. I brought the system shortcuts from my Windows 7 toolbar and incorporated it into the 8.1 toolbar. LOL

Right-click on Taskbar, start Task Manager, Resource Monitor link is on the Performance tab, exactly as it is in Win 7. No need to learn anything different!

I use Toolbars instead of a 3rd party Start Menu replacement. I group my links in folders so I can create cascading toolbars that work very similarly to the old Start Menu. I've used Toolbars in this manner since Win 2000 so when Win 8 came along, I didn't need to learn anything new in regards to that either. It literally took me about 5 minutes to learn how to switch back and forth between the Start screen and the desktop and realize that I could do everything in Win 8 that I could do in Win 7. From the very first time I ran the Developer Preview of Win 8 I felt that Win 8 was basically Win 7 with an optional interface (Start screen and Metro apps) tacked on. The keyword here is OPTIONAL.

On my desktops or laptops, I rarely use any Metro apps and run almost exclusively from the desktop. On my Win 8.1 tablet with touch screen, I use a mixture of both desktop and Metro apps. Metro apps are designed for touch so they are easier to use on a touch-only device. Desktop apps weren't designed with touch in mind so they are more difficult to use with their drop-down menus where it can be challenging to select the desired choice in the drop down with a fat finger (stylus helps out in this situation).

I won't say I prefer Win 8 over Win 7, at least not to the point that I would consider upgrading a machine running fine with Win 7 to Win 8 but I have purchased 2 new computers that came with Win 8 and have zero regrets and no wish to install Win 7 on them.

so they are easier to use on a touch-only device ...
Really? I click the Weather tile (or Netflix, or a dozen others) and click here, there, pull down with the hand and done! How is that more difficult than using a smartphone?

... What is a touch-only device ? A telephone? What is a telephone for?

I guess I wasn't clear in what I was trying to say. I didn't mean to imply that the apps worked better with touch than when using a mouse/keyboard, I was trying to say that on a touch-only device (no mouse or keyboard, such as a tablet or phone) Metro apps are easier to use since they were designed with touch in mind. For instance, buttons are larger and spaced further apart so they can be selected easier via a fat finger rather than require the precision of a mouse.

That is what many think. That because metro apps (and the metro UI / tifkam) are designed with touch in mind, they are more difficult to use with a mouse and keyboard. But my response is, IS touch easy to use?
Isn't it true that a mouse and keyboard are easier to use than touch?

Fair question.

My response would be, touch is fine for hand held devices.
Keyboard and mouse for lap and desk top...

Lately it was cold in Florida - only in the 60s all week.

Regarding toolbars - you can actually stick a lot of stuff into a toolbar if you organize it into subfolders like I have done. I even have subfolders within subfolders. So I already have 30 entries in just this one folder - could be more. And everything flows from my toolbar folder called "ALL".

its all about attitude , just like in this thread ,that getting close to 2 years old
http://www.eightforums.com/performance-maintenance/4602-found-resource-monitor.html

I cant imagine not liking win8 just because I cant find resource monitor the same way I did in win7 ,how many time does one need to use the resource monitor anyway .

I use the resource monitor daily because I like to know what's going on in my system. I am usually running Windows 7 plus 2 virtual machines in parallel and I like to make sure the system is not overloaded.

Question of liking Window 8 - I actually like 8 and 8.1. I think I was one of the first to publish a dozen tutorials about the very early versions of 8. But I still believe that it is not the best solution for the desktop user. A complete revamping of the UI for the desktop user was as necessary as a shot into the knee.

I spent 35 years of my life in architecture, design and implementation of operating systems. I know that developers do crazy things like that. But I also know that it would have been easy to provide a version for without touch and a version for touch. That would have avoided all that flack. But M$ is stybborn. They are strategy driven not user requirements driven - which again is something I have seen many times.

Well no, it's not exactly what they did. They tried a little sleight of hand with the start button that didn't lead where it should have... and that just pissed people off even more.

God mode is probably the most direct pass to the system functions. I had built an extensive shortcut list from god mode in Windows 7. I use that as repository for a toolbar in Windows 7 and copied it into Windows 8 where it also works as a toolbar.

Yeah right, Windows 8.1 is a polycephaly - neither fish nor fowl.
I'd rather call it "2 in1 but none of the above".
I use "God Mode" to access most of the insider staff.

God mode is probably the most direct pass to the system functions. I had built an extensive shortcut list from god mode in Windows 7. I use that as repository for a toolbar in Windows 7 and copied it into Windows 8 where it also works as a toolbar.

Got 242 entries in god mode on Win 8.1, quite a bit more than on Win 7. It's most direct route to settings and functions. It's also divided in groups by function and that makes it even handier. Mine is sitting on desktop and on Start in tools sub section. Usually first place I go to.
