HP brings back Windows 7 'by popular demand'...,

HP really wants people to buy a Windows 7 PC instead of a Windows 8 machine. The PC maker has been emailing customers over the weekend noting that "Windows 7 is back." A new promotion, designed to entice people to select Windows 7 over Windows 8 with $150 of "savings," has launched on HP’s website with a "back by popular demand" slogan. The move is clearly designed to position Windows 7 over Microsoft’s touch-centric Windows 8 operating system.

I never had that particular problem on any of my 4 laptops. But my HP laptop died all together. Have to bring it to the shop when I am back in Germany. I am afraid the mobo died because it does not even load the BIOS. - but maybe it is only the Cmos battery because it is 7 years old. My 2 Gateways that are years old and my Toshiba from 2011 never gave me problems - knock on wood. And now I have this little cutie. We'll see how that holds up.

More likely because it was made ten years ago.

Most recent stuff is flimsy in comparison, not just computer stuff.

They LITERALLY don't build them like they used to, and that's a shame...

That's interesting, weren't TVs back then more repairable than nowadays? Or was it because they crapped out often back then?

I'm just wondering, because I actually have an LCD TV to fix. :geek:

They had to be more repairable because they crapped out, tubes have a short life span.

Speaking of the devil, a friend of mine gave me their uncle's laptop to troubleshoot. The issue on hand is that it seems to overheat and shutdown.

It's an HP Envy m4 ultrabook, barely a year old.

How funny! :D

Thinking about this, the ONLY other epic failure for a cooling solution on a laptop I've ever seen was on this dirt cheap Toshiba laptop, I think with a Pentium processor? Anyways, it was overheating and shutting down. I ended up cracking it open and exposing the heatsink to see if that would have any beneficial effect, it did. The problem? There was LITERALLY no air flow vent anywhere on the chassis close the heatsink. Normally where the fan grille would be at, it wasn't even cut out or anything. The solution I gave was an external laptop cooler or straight up use a hole saw and drill a fan vent in it. But even still, not as bad as HP! ;)

My HP laptop kept overheating too. Even a coolpad did not help a lot. Then I replaced the HDD with a SSD and the problem was solved. But now the whole thing is on a blink. Have to get it looked at. It is from 2007 after all.

Indeed, there are many (consumer) HP's I would not touch even with a long stick (have seen Pavilions turned into scrap > GPU failure), but they also offer some of the best laptops available, example the Probook & Elitebook range. Got a few of them here, great machinery, year after year.

I personally have scrap parts from an old Pavilion DV-4 laptop and parts lying around for an HP AIO touch PC that came with Windows 7. The laptop's GPU crapped out and of course wasn't a dedicated card, the AIO's touch LCD panel overheated and died, which is shocking to me as I've never heard of that one happening. There was also an HP netbook I recycled since it had a dead LCD panel and dead GPU.

As for the Pro and Elitebooks, I'll go around elsewhere for a business class laptop from Lenovo or even better yet, just any typical ASUS laptop. I don't like how HP as of recent years have been styling literally all their PCs like macs and even name a lineup of laptops oddly similar to, macbook. Ugh. If I wanted something that looked like a mac and named similarly to a mac, I'll buy a mac but hell will have to freeze over the devil himself better build me a condominium before that happens.

HP Playing Both Ends Against The Middle with 7 & 8

Received an email today from HP Direct and most of their desktops and all-in-one's are back to Windows 8 or 8.1. Guess they are trying to please everyone or just trying anything to sell hardware.
