How Microsoft Makes Profits

At the exhibition, MS refused to release specs on the "Surface" tablet, other than stating that there would be both a 32 and 64 bit version. The hard protective magnesium cover has a full-sized keyboard on the inside. The "kickstand" is so hard to work that people couldn't use it even after it was explained to them. MS did state that the prices would be close to similar devices, so expect it to cost around $1,000.

Okay, this makes sense. MS has relied on competing hardware companies to make Windows computers, while Apple designs its own computers and software together. But no one has built a Windows tablet that is even close to what Apple has.

Designing their hardware and operating systems together has its advantages, but MS does not have a successful track record in this area. If it works, we'll have better Windows computers, but less competition can raise the prices. And MS will make even more profits.
