How Microsoft can salvage Windows 8 before it's too late

This is a tough challenge, given that Windows 8 is only a few months away from release. There's not a lot that Microsoft can do in this time. However, given that the Redmond giant has already gone on the record to say that the UI that we see in the Windows 8 Release Preview is not what will be in the final release, it's safe to say that things are in a certain state of flux.

As I've said on numerous occasions, the biggest problem with Windows 8 is the way that the dumbed-down Metro UI has been unceremoniously bolted onto the mature and well-refined "Classic" user interface. While there's no doubt that the existing UI is flawed, bolting on a UI designed for touch devices is not the answer.

OK, you asked me to keep this concise, so here it is. Here's how I think Microsoft should tweak Windows 8 before it's released:

Though they are talking about doing a release a year in the future. I assume because Apple gets away with it and Ballmer has got a huge case of Apple Envy :)

Of course, on the apple front, not much has changed in the past 10 years since OSX came out. I honestly cannot hardly differentiate between Cheetah, Puma, Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion and now Mountain Lion. It's good that their releases are cheap, because they don't offer much of a change at all. It's basically a mini service pack for $20. Kinda like an add-on map pack for a video game.

there lies the problem. You do not buy on OS every year, you do not buy a new car every year......

Jeff

XP was released in Oct of 2001
Vista was released in Jan of 2007
7 was released in July of 2009
8 is slated for release in Oct of 2012.

So, it's not a release per year.

I sure was glad, as I'm sure others were, that 7 came along sooner after the piece-of-work Vista! Can you imagine all the money spent on Vista?!! -> And then 7 to make up for it?! Probably added up to all the paid sewer bills in the world! :p

How Microsoft can salvage Windows 8 before it's too late? WELL not by CHARGING customers that buy a NEW PC with a Windows 8 upgrade offer attached THAT'S for SURE! Funny part too is, they DON'T send it on a CD/DVD, they send you a LINK so you can download it, and install it. *mutter* *grumble*!!!!! Dang IMAGE file FFS! WHO here wants to bet me THEY are already working on the NEXT version of Windows? I wonder if they'll drop 9, and go to 10?

I don't know what they will call it.

I don't think it will be too long.

A year seems likely - there is plenty they need to change.

Where you coming from, Mike? Not like you. Having a bad day?

Nothing wrong with M$ trying to stimulate the economy with a little incentive. That's what companies do. $40 over the cost of a new rig isn't that bad. Hopefully consumers are aware that 8 is designed more for touch, so as to buy the correct one. Also, there aiding OEMs with their incentive, especially at a time where some may be displeased at the decision of the Surface.

So far as the link for a download -> One doesn't have to wait for the mail to arrive. It's instant -> Buy now -> Get now.

No bet....I'm sure they're working on the next one. Any bets the desktop won't be included? ;)

Addictional 3 things imo for desktop: 1) sensors on status bar tray (temperature, cpu etc) you can choose which sensor you want there. 2) better organize your desktop and create transparent menu boxes on your desktop as you can put the files inside. 3) color folder option. These are what they should do! [: Tell them please
