Hidden tray Icons turning into white boxes over time.
Quite happy with Win 8 Pro but just one little niggle has reared its head. After a couple of days uptime my tray icons in the hidden pop up are turning into white squares, which makes them hard to identify. I tried rebuilding the icon cache as found here,
Icon Cache - Rebuild - Windows 7 Help Forums which seemed to solve the problem. But a few days later an icon has turned back into a white box, a bandwidth meter. Any solutions?

It's happened again. One Icon has turned into a blank square. If I restart the program the blank icon disappears then reappears as a blank icon again. A restart cures it but why after a few days uptime does one of the icons turn blank. I'm sure if I run the computer for a few more days without a restart if I can more icons will turn blank. Something is amiss.
Tim
Here's a screenshot of the blank hidden area. If I change the Icon to be shown on the taskbar the Icon still stays invisible.

Does resetting the notification area sort it again?

I would imagine resetting the Icon stream will fix it as does a reboot. As an experiment I am going to leave it running for a few more days to see if any more Icons disappear, I think patch Tuesday is coming up so may have to reboot then which will probably fix it. The program in the screenshot is thinkbroadband.com adsl meter but other Icons have disappeared in the past. Will report back in a few days.

OK had to reboot for installation of a program and the icons are back to normal. Seems to occur after a few days uptime, the more uptime the more icons that disappear. Any ideas ? Someone suggested lack of resources on another board, in particular GDI and user objects, have 1.5gb memory free.

I would lean more towards some sort of corruption that keeps happening. Now the corruption can be caused by a number of unknown issues.
Are you having any other issues that may be related?

Nothing else seems untoward and it only seems to happen after a few days of uptime. chkdsk says disks are all ok. Schedule is running tasks such as defrag and image backup as per out of the box. I am running Sugarsync which may have a memory leak wonder if I should disable that over a few days and see, although no problems on same version on an XP box.

It wouldn't hurt to temporarily disable Sugarsync for a few days to see, then see if it happens after enabling it again.

OK will try and report back as SS does keep changing its icon wonder if its filling the cache? Have noticed windows live mail 2012 sometimes doesnt display in the preview pane, have to click out and click back on the mail message for the preview to come up. Wonder if these problems are display driver related, latest Nvidia drivers installed.

Have disabled SS and also there is an update for SS as there was a memory leak but windows updates required a reboot so will have to wait another 4/5 days to see if this icon problem re-occurs.

Seems to have happened today after 3 days uptime. 3 Icons now show as white squares this is driving me nuts. Solution is to reboot but thats not really practical.
Edit: Have discovered that logging off and back on re-displays the icons back to normal.

Restarting explorer in task manager does sort of work. The white spaces are cured but some icons that were there dont show up in the tray. Sugarsync has the option to mark each icon in explorer with a little green tick, Im wondering if this is taking too many resources so have disabled it, will report back.

Thought I had cracked it turning off Sugarsync Icons but no the 4th day of uptime (since sign out and sign in) and 2 icons have turned to white boxes. The memory leak in SugarSync is fixed so am pretty much at a loss as to what is causing this. Easy fix is to log off and back on but I dont like easy fixes LOL

This is reaching out there, but you might defrag and run
chkdsk on the drive may help if there may be corruption on the drive causing it.

Chkdsk reports no errors and Windows 8 is set to automatically optimize drives during the night. I think I have seen this happen in XP not the invisible icons but the disappearing icon tips. Never got to the bottom of it.
