Block it using hosts file

If you can identify the website name, you can add it to your hosts file and "block" it.

For example,if the site is "blah.com" add something like this to your hosts file:

Hey the picture vanished!

Let's try again:

If you use Windows 8 Manager, you can block OR allow from the hosts file. Actually I hadn't though of what the Hosts file may look like, maybe Elbmek should install Yamicsoft Windows 8 Manager and have a look:



You can download the program from the Yamicsoft website and run it for 15 days free, and it's not that expensive if you wanna buy it. There are a lot of areas in there where you can apply settings that are sometimes hidden deep within the system.

If you think I should try yamicsoft - then I shall take your advice. Kaspersky has been up to something whilst I was away form the pc this evening. I found it running something call '?? disinfection' and then a scan, did a reboot, and now is doing a FULL scan; maybe they have downloaded something in an upgrade???

I Dunno, kaspersky is a trustworthy company, they have never done sneaky things to me.

You did have a LOT of IObit programs, not just the one you said you used, but there were a bunch of others. You should get rid of the ones you are not using. I'll have to look in your file again.

When the Kaspersky is done, shoot a log file of the results, let's see what it was up to.

I am not dishing KIS, I am pleased it was doing some serious work. I have downloaded and installed The win 8 manager and I am impressed. I ran services and there was that Premier Option but disabled, so I just highlighted and and deleted!! Whoooooooo. I have been slowly going through the manager and a fair bit of cleaning too, I even might need to defrag !!!! Very pleased and hopefully we have a winner. Going to do a reboot now and run a few bits to see if better.

As for Iobit. I have Advanced system Care 6.3 with several add ons like Iobit Malware Fighter,Smart Defrag, which seems better than windows defrag and some others. I do not know yet but if this Win 8 Manager does all this and more, I think I know what direction I will be heading.

I do know Kaspersky have been working on my problem and I have sent them a detailed log from a small exe file they said to run to produce such a log. Awaiting reply from them on that, its only been a few so not fussed. I have been at work all day so not had chance to see if anything 'pops' up, nothing yet though.

Ok, be very careful with that "1-Click Cleaner" it WILL delete stuff you don't want deleted if you are not careful with it. You can configure it, and also you can check your Recycle Bin after it runs, and restore anything that you didn;t want deleted. It looks for dupes, old installers, and temp files, but it sometimes deletes installers that are required for an uninstall, so if you run 1-Click and it puts some MSI files into the trash, you should restore them.

Wow thats a lotta stuff to go through. But it looks like you've got a bunch os users on this system, whatever you do to yours, will have to be done for their profiles too. Looks like three users.

thanks xwe, wil check that ref in a moment. My wife uses it, but only work related. My grandsons use it to watch trains on youtube and for some online kids games (danger area I know ,if they press wrong button) my daughter uses it for image ,fb, and music downloading - so, yes its a busy pc. Another daughter uses in very infrequently to download odds

I found a snap do search thing in my daughter IE10; placed it in restricted folder in options. Stll try to remember where in Win 8 Manager I listed registry entry to delete the section you showed me, cannot find any references in pc anywhere else though. Now going to check the kids IE10

I found that folder Xwe, the smartbar is not listed, checked hidden, not listed ??

Currently doing registry using tool in windows utilities in Win 8 Manager, found 4 entries for keyword 'smartbar' and deleted. Microsoft Malicious software currently scanning too. Kaspersky Root kit scan running automatically now, nothing found.

Well everything ran, incl Microsoft Malicious - all showing zero results. Went into program data and the infamous premier opinion folder has gone too. So now we wait and see. When I told windows to show all hidden files, that prgramdata section did not show, but when I used Win 8 Manager and then checked it showed up, so looked inside - no folder.

Ok, the Smartbar thing references a folder, which, if not there any more, meant there were reg entries left over. I think we have eradicated the popup server, we'll just have to see. It was a combination of bad programs.
