Solved Clean install on ASUS Tablet

so how many GBs did you end up saving with the fresh install vs the asus install (before you added office etc)???

Im gonna re do mine this coming week... but 1st have to encrypt/reset to factory my note 10.1 2014 that Im selling and I also need to re do my nook HD with a new custom ROM.. so those 2 tablets are 1st in line...then the asus... and I hate to say it, but if I cant find a way to sharpen the text via clear type or a better PDF app (android has 3-4 that ive used over the years and 2 of them really can sharpen up text on low res tablets) then I am prob going to sell the asus as well and Ill have to get a higher resolution windows 8 tablet or go back to android... Im learning that windows 8.1 on a tablet isnt near as good as I was hoping it would be... the fact that PDFs are easier to read (and I have more settings customization options) 2 years ago on a lower res android tablet than windows 8.1 and its app store.. says something about the state of windows 8.1 in general... my only savior is bluestacks so that I can use my android apps in windows...if that doest work... prob good bye asus... the thing is I was considering a surface pro 2 or 3 (if prices came down enough) for blackfriday or xmas... but now I am thinking thats not a good idea after this trial run, it just doesnt suit my needs as good as android does (at least so far in my comparison and Im a loyal windows kinda guy)... Ill prob wait will windows 9 comes out before I even think about a windows tablet...well anyways im just complaining bc so far Im not satisfied but thats life right... try it and if it doesnt work...move on to the next...

It seems like 10 or more GB i saved have to remember some apps are not there anymore with mine now too.

So far it is running flawless, but of course you can never compare it to a Laptop or a Desktop for performance.
Office will take about 2GB, but then there will be updates for it through Windows Updates.

You need to stop bunching your paragraphs and sentences up, hard to read it then.

Well resolution on the ASUS is 1366x768 not too bad, but at 10.1" screen.
Hey i wear glasses, can't see even my Desktop well without them, but it looks fine on my ASUS. Have to check this out more what you are talking about with PDF's.

So far i have not even gotten the chance to use it, reader. I will try it out let you know what i feel if anything is wrong or it can be adjusted.

Try making a post for this here to see what others know can maybe help you more too.
A question is can you use Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows 8 or 8.1 still, i am not sure of this and also sometimes felt it not a safe program.

So far Tablet is running good, i would not do this if you are going to sell it though.

sorry about the block paragraph

10GB is a nice little chunk of savings there!

well its not the actual resolution thats the issue... I previously use to read lots of PDFs on my old note 10.1 which had 1280x800 (149ppi) and the vivotab has 155 ppi, so its basically the same... but the problem is when you only have 1 or 2 apps and a few not so great touch programs to chose from (all of which do not render them very well or have options to change rendering from low to medium to high like my android apps do) thats where the problem lies for me...

I just had hoped that it being full windows the lack of app store options wouldnt be too much of a problem bc I can use full windows exe programs, thats why I chose the asus vivotab smart...but this is a deal breaker for me so Ill use it and keep working on a resolution (trying as many readers as I can etc and see if I can find one that works good enough for my needs) and if I can ill keep it if not ill use it till I sell it...

its too bad too bc I really like the vivotab smart and I was slightly worried about the older clover trail atom cpu..but so far its been better than I had anticipated!

anyways very glad you got yours all set up and did the trial run so others can see its not hard and well worth it!

It's o.k. about your grammar, lol not trying to insult you. I used to write the same when i first started on forums, but it does make it harder to read and OP use to comment on mine.

Guess i learned better. Tablet used about 10GB for Windows 8.1 and all it's updates, plus the ASUS drivers and ASUS Live Update software.

Yes i marked this thread solved, thanks to you. Oh, some of my help in research and OP that posted a comment.:geek:

When i used to use Windows 7 they was no apps for reader like Windows 8.1, so i used to use Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Thought i heard once it can be a security risk, i am not sure though maybe i am thinking of Adobe Flash. Do not know if or how it works on Windows 8 or 8.1 have not tried.

I need to get a PDF and take a look on this Tablet myself. I thought the OP here made a suggestion to you about this issue.
For me this Tablet suits my needs, i do like ASUS's products.

My PC and Monitor are both ASUS. I do like there monitors.LCD/LED backlit IPS Panel 1920X1080 HDMI.
I don't know how long you have had this Tablet to say if you should keep it or not.

Hi there,
I have just purchased the Me400c and like the form factor very much.
Many Thanks for the info on this.
After suffering the 2 days of windows updates , weird behaviour etc I decided to do a clean install with your help .
One thing I have to ask ...
are you able to optimise your emmc ?
I could not do this before clean install and it seems that optimisation is still not available after ?
Is it just my tablet or is this a common thing ?
Cheers again

eMMC is what most people call the ssd ..which it is not

I have now spent hours reading and from what I can work out the eMMC (ssd) Might?
Not meet the necessary specification to run drive optimisation and trim .
I was just curious to see if anyone could clarify this ...right click c: drive , tools, optimise ?
Cheers

Now that i know what you mean, that is the way with Win8, but most will say not to defrag a SSD, but from what i found out it trims it. Now some will have tweaks for you if you look hard enough around. I would not suggest it.

Not interested in tweaking it.
I was just worried that something was wrong with my drivers or the drive itself as I have read that if optimisation (not defreg) doesn't run then the drive slows down , fills up with garbage data and becomes corrupt.
Thanks for having a look for me ,
I have install a tune up program to do a sheduled maintenance cleanup every few days to see if it helps .
will keep you informed and if you stumble on any more info please let me know ☺

O.k., seems to me now performance is not good at all, even after clean install.

Be careful what you choose with tune up software, most might cause more damage then good.
May need to turn off some stuff running, check the task manager, then startup. Bluetooth is one, if not using. There is another i can not remember it, something to do with communicating with other devices, like phones, turn that off too.

Use CCleaner clean cache, windows history.

Once a week should be enough for Optimize.

Hey again ,
Yes already turned off bluetooth and the other one is nfc.

Tune up utilities 2014 is the software I'm trying out.
It's now owed by AVG ...
Used it years ago on my laptop and it was fine, Kept it running nicely for a few year's so I thought I'd give it a go.

Do you still own the Asus ??

Yes i do, i am familiar with TuneUp Utilities, it's alright use to use it to turn off certain programs i did not want to completely disable, has a feature does it nicely, deactivate. Try not to use the Registry cleaner. Flight mode is nice too. Always been AVG, make 2 version one with a yearly subscription and one without. Felt the cleaner part of it was not too good.

Other ways of doing what this program does if you are knowledgeable with the PC. Sometimes people like easier option, let a program do it.

NFC yes that was the one, kills battery life along with Bluetooth, unless you are using them.

Yeah the options are pretty cool, Turned off the annoying notifications on the taskbar that pop up, except the one's I want.
It was another company back in 2006 when I used it lol...

Just out of curiosity does yours say optimisation not available too ?
In windows that is.

I wanted to work out if anyone has it working without any tweaking etc as I haven't managed to find a positive yes or no anywhere online..

Is It going to get to a point where I just have to reformat every 6 Months or so like the Asus eeepc 701 I had running xp that went all corrupt every so often lol

Talking about TuneUp saying optimizations not available or Windows 8 ?

Again are you talking about having your ASUS ME400C working well without tweaking ?

Most were having issues with the version of Windows 8 ASUS put on they felt, freezing, crashes.
Originally posted if there was a way to do a clean install, this was out of curiosity at first.

Knowing if i ever needed to do a system recovery i would have to go through putting back all those Windows updates again, plus Windows 8.1 and there updates, so i figured if i could do this clean install, be less to do.
I am not saying it needs to be done, but around the net a lot of others were experiencing issues with original install.

I feel it works good, with fresh clean install of Windows, i put Windows 8.1 on mine. Tweaking, is questionable, matters if you know what you are doing. Plus will it really make a big difference, always make a restore point. Do not want to keep reformatting, not good for the drive.

In windows mate I did say ☺

As I say I've clean installed from disk windows 8.1 update 1 and activated it with the oem key fine .

I always make a restore image as soon as I have the machine up and running with all drivers and updates at the time .

If you right click, Select properties on your c drive then tools , optimise. Does it say optimisation not available and the optimise button is greyed out ?
At first it wasn't greyed out but changed as soon as I clicked it .

Drive is a Solid State Drive, optimize is not grayed out ,but analyze is.

This is the same with my Windows 8.1 Pro Desktop. Just believe does not need to analyze a SSD, when it optimizes it it trims it.

System restore before updates and after awhile that you know all is good.

If you click optimise it will grey out and say optimisation not available I believe.
Does it tell you when your drive was last optimised if it doesn't its never run or been trimmed mate .
From what I have found so far it is seen as an sdcard.

Really sorry I just realised I have hi-jacked the thread and turned it into a dicussion about the disk ..
if a Mod wants to delete my questions about the eMMC please do .

Thanks alot ☺ getting there slowly

No, if i click optimize it runs and trims the drive. Last time was a week ago. You believe , are you sure ?

You can set a schedule, weekly, monthly and daily. Oh, can't do it to the recovery partition.
Not sure why yours is doing this possibly.

No not hi-jacking this thread/post, actually it is marked solved, but the Mods leave it open to help others as you said it has helped you.

Anytime!! YW

Now if you want to open a new thread with your poblem to see if anybody knows why.
Most are going to tell you not to defrag an SSD, but from research it isn't.
