Solved Anybody else have a good working computer ?

Hmm..is there any problem in doing that - can we do the image restore properly?

Does Macrium free version has this?

Edit:
@David Bailey: I didn't mean - :sarc: to be sarcastic, just curious how did you do that? Didn't get a good smiley to express that in my mobile app , Sorry if that upset you:(

I can't speak for the free version.
I have the paid version.
I've never had a problem restoring from my highly compressed images.

I can match all the above on my Vista and W7 installs (which at the moment are just Acronis backups having moved to W8.1). I can also say hand on heart I have ZERO failed updates on both. My W8.1 installations are absolutely fine too although my Enterprise test bed has a driverless webcam. Action centre whinges that I have updates set to notify only but that's my choosing.

As to malware, I just use (used) MSE on Vista and W7 and never had an issue. Folk (on other forums) said I was deluded and that there would be nasties there and that it was MSE that didn't pick them up. I challenged them and using a disk image I uninstalled MSE and ran free full trials of ESET and FSecure and Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware etc . The system was 100% clean.

AOMEI backupper works well (I'm using it on my Enterprise install) but it has a "glitch" which I've reported to them. When you restore an image your Windows Update history is wiped clean. The updates themselves are unaffected, its just the history list. I couldn't understand what was happening at first but proved it to be AOMEI by imaging and restoring. The list at any given point is wiped on the restore.

For my main W8.1 install I use Acronis TI2014 paid for version and always do daily incrementals on a weekly cycle together with month end full images. I keep those on an external HDD.

I have to have an EHDD solely for system image backup, isn't it?

Which is the best among free versions with no glitches felt?
Any problem in having the Windows updates list washed out after aomei restore?

As a backup and restore tool it works really well (if a little slow compared to paid for versions) The free version also allows incremental backups to be created which is handy. Its easy to use too.

How do I go ahead with calculating the size of ehdd or flash drive needed for image backup? System image backup external drive can be used only for this right, after formatting? Any particular way of formatting to be kept in mind?

I going to do it for the first time, that's why all these doubts, it may be some dumb questions.

My c: is 60Gigs, d: is 20Gigs
WinRE is 400 or 600mb like that.

For size, take off no more than 25% than total size of disk you are going to back up. Disk could be used for anything else, all you get for backup is one file that eventually can be mounted as a disk. The rest of space you can use for other backups or whatever. Normal NTFS format is enough. Fat32 can't be used because of 4GB file limit.

I'll have a look in a few minutes what the backup sizes are (different PC to this one) but I know they are quite small (compressed like Acronis). The external drive is probably best formatted at its default settings, or you can change it to NTFS but it doesn't really matter and makes no difference to the backup.

OK Mike, that comes around 240GB. I have a 2TB WD EHDD with all other files, wd backup of personal data etc.
I can just use the aomei back upper and go ahead with creating the system image on to the EHDD with no other formalities, isn't it?

Where can i check if my ext drive is ntfs

A backup of my 20Gb C drive comes in at 12.Gb with AOMEI

To check/format/alter your HDD just right click the drive in "This PC" and select format (nothing will happen) and look at what it tells you.

No problem. The backup files are complete in themselves and you can even move them around if you want to other drives. These two are my current backup files (circled) mixed in with other stuff.

OK, are you using compression for making 20gigs to 12gigs in aomei or is it like that when we normally make an image?

Except for the Windows update history, there is nothing else should i bother about in aomei right?

Which format is you can find in drive properties, considering it's not over 2.2GB it's probably NTFS. No need for an extra partition, eventually only a folder appropriately named but a partition would also be good because if something goes wrong with one partition the other one is relatively safe. For such large disks it makes sense to have partitions anyway.

If whole disk is backed up, shouldn't all files together with update files be backed up, with AOMEI I mean, as far as I know Macrium Reflect backs up everything when done like that. If you back up only system I can understand, but whole disk ?

OK Mike, I'll try partitioning, but as I said this is my first time doing this too:(
Can I partition it with all the other files remaining in there & could create the image onto the partition, right?
Any good applications for partitioning?
