Hi there
I do prefer outlook but understand people might not be able to afford it -- however GMAIL works just fine - seems stable enough too and doesn't change every 5 mins.

Cheers

OK I did a clean install of 8.1 on my laptop and everything went well. However I did run into one compatibility issue, which basically rendered my current copy of Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2013 in-op. It appears NIS 2013 isn't compatible with 8.1, and this will not install... at all. Wound up installing the beta version of NIS 2014 (NIS 21)

Other than that, all seems good thus far. Hate the way SkyDrive works now - can't access options since it's now built into 8.1 and the icon doesn't show up in the notification area like the "desktop" version below. It also means I can't enable it to fetch files off the laptop like I can with the "desktop" version of SkyDrive

That said, has anyone figured out a way to enable fetch files from the Win 8.1 SkyDrive app???

I can almost guarantee you the reason NIS says it is incompatible is due to the new OS version, and that is the only reason.
iow, the app would work fine if it didnt put a check in there for OS version, they just want to sell you the upgrade.
one reason i don't use NIS. Defender, which is included with Windows works just fine and is free.

I have not tested skydrive in 8.1, just did some preliminary tests and made sure it would work on my laptop and activate with my upgrade key, which it does. so now reinstalling and will check that out.

True as it may be, it still won't install on Win 8.1.... whatever the reason :(

As for Defender (aka Microsoft Security Essential (MSE)), been using it since it came out, and still use it on my desktop. However, being this is a portable laptop, I trust NIS a heck of a lot more than MSE in this situation. Your millage may vary, I see it differently.

I didn't say it didn't work, I said it works differently. BTW you don't need to install SkyDrive, it is now part of 8.1. In fact, if you try and install the "desktop" version, it'll just laugh....

The SkyDrive desktop app has been replaced by new "SkyDrive" app features that are built into Windows 8.1 Preview. The desktop app settings and status info are no longer available from the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar. If you install the SkyDrive desktop app, it will look like nothing happened. The desktop app features won't be reinstalled.

That said, has anyone figured out a way to enable fetch files from the Win 8.1 SkyDrive app???

Go to file explorer, right click on SkyDrive and select "Make Available Offline" on the context menu or go to SkyDrive metro app, charms, setting, options and set "Access all files off line" to Yes.

Mine took 3 days to download 45k files (about 4GB only). Very slow but all available offline. Alternatively you can choose individual files or folders within SkyDrive directory through the file explorer context menu.

Thanks but I wasn't looking to view my files in off-line mode. I'm looking to link my laptop to SkyDrive.com as shown here...

Brinks Skydrive image.jpg

This is from Brink's tutorial here: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/24856-skydrive-desktop-app-start-close-windows.html Notice the PC's (red arrow). With them showing there, you can access them from any PC just by logging into skydrive.com. I've got my desktop loaded, and had my laptop loaded, until I upgraded to 8.1.

Apparently Win 8.1's SkyDrive app now works differently, and you can't (or at least I haven't found it) seem to access the options to do so like you can with the "desktop" app.

There's a SkyDrive app that's included with 8.1, and for Win 7/8 you download it. They seem to function a bit differently as discussed in the warning here: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/24860-skydrive-desktop-app-allow-prevent-start-sign.html

Hi there -

The built in security is quite sufficient for most users with windows 8 / 8.1 - just DITCH Norton - it's not very good anyway and a lot of people have reported that it slows your computer down drastically and is a resource hog.

Cheers

I misunderstood your SkyDrive issue, sorry. At 8.1 the first time I went into SkyDrive metro app then it automatically authenticated the PC. In my case it sent me a SMS code to enter. The PC is synching but doesn't show in the list of PCs on skydrive.live.com so I have same issue it seems.

thanks for the warm welcome sir hipps..but i want the 8.1 rtm leaked sir..because i want a clean install to my laptop with windows 8.1 pro

You're quite welcome. :)

I know there are leaked versions, but I wouldn't know where to find a good one. I'm sure someone else will help you in that area if that's what you want to do. I see you're a gamer so you must be somewhat an advanced user. I'm sure you know that one must be careful with these versions.

If it were me I'd keep it simple, download the RP ISO, fresh install that to try it out. The public release is just a few weeks away (not a month).

Whatever you decide good luck to you.

I'm running the leaked RTM (64-bit) as a standalone install, and have had very few issues.

The main one being that IE11 is NOT ready for prime-time.

The rest of the OS is very nice, and the new boot selection and going to All Apps instead of the Start screen is a winner.

I'll agree with that. While it's nice and fast, there are some sites it doesn't play nice with. Nothing back breaking for me, but annoyances nonetheless.

The main one being that IE11 is NOT ready for prime-time.

If by that you mean many web sites seem to have problems, this is problems with those websites. They have not been updated to expect IE11 as a possible browser.

You can work around this for most sites by pressing F12, then going to the Emulation tab on the left, and then changing the User Agent String to IE10. That will work for most sites, but some may also require you to change the document type as well. Once IE11 is officially released, those sites ill get updated to support IE11 and this problem should eventually go away.

This is not a problem with IE11, and it's not that it's not "ready for prime time", it's that developers are lazy and they write code like "If the browser version is 10, do this cool new thing" and forgetting that there may be a version 11, which won't get that feature anymore.
