a few have been looking at various ways to get the Start menu back
I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned "Classic Shell" -- menu is customisable as well

Welcome to Classic Shell
this it what it looks like on my system (note I've taken the standard option but you can customize it after installation via settings==>classic shell.
(You still have to click desktop after bootup to get to the desktop but that's hardly a pain given the faster boot time anyway).
Bye Bye those 97 zillion million tiles !!.
