The Start Menu is Back W8 RP (at least 99.999%) !!!

I tried the fix again, on a new installation, but omitted the Copying of the .scf to the desktop - didn't work.
What means "didn't work" ? Appear a Windows where you should say with what program you want to open the .scf file ?

I regret that I am unable to understand you. I do NOT want a request as to how to open the .scf file, The idea of the hack is to go straight to the desktop, without user intervention.
Thank you for your comments, but it is working exactly as I want it.

I think we misunderstood. I do the same like you and tried the fix on an other clean installation. And there it didn't work. Instead of switching to desktop a windows appear where I should choose with what program I want to open the .scf file - like it was an unknown file extension.

I fix the problem by starting once the .scf file regular by double click the file. After this Windows knows what to with .scf files and the hack works next booting.

Another Suggestion

However, while using the Windows 8 Release Preview, I came up with new idea. Since hovering the mouse pointer in the lower left corner of the Screen brings up a Start Screen icon (basically right where the Start button used to be) and clicking it takes you to the Start Screen (which replaced the Start Menu), why not get rid of all the tiles on the Start Screen and populate with application shortcut icons.

Lol, I think we have all tried that already - not exactly a new discovery, Greg.

Unfortunately, it still means going back to the damn start screen.

Instead of messing about with that - I prefer to use a start menu replacement that keeps you in the main ui.

Startmenu7 is interesting - and so is Ivo's Classic shell.

Another idea is to do the icon pinning as described by Greg , then use this fellow Start8 for Windows® 8 - Bringing back the Windows Start menu

That's effectively one of the reasons that the Start Screen happened.....

Hi everyone. I'm the tester for Classic Shell. It's skinnable and every aspect of it is customizable. Here's how mine looks:

CSH.png

It doesn't depend on an indexer running, so it searches only programs and Control Panel settings, not files at the moment. You can have the cursor by default in the search box so you hit Win key, type a search term and launch the app or setting.

Hi xpclient,

Classic Shell is excellent - thanks to those who put in the effort to make it.

These kind of things are a life saver on Windows 8.

I am still having the issue with computer menu on windows 8.

Will try it on win7 and see if it is ok there.

Have been busy Ivo.

Have checked it on 7 - so it is not my hard drive - it must be win8 issue.

Will set it up once more.

If the issue persists after that, then will contact you - thanks.

PS how did xpclient get rid of the icons in the right pane ? #28

Using ClassicShell with Win 8 32-bit CP on 'my second-string' machine, a
3-year-old Acer AS5735 lappy.

Once I'd played with the options and set it up to suit me, I think it's great.

Well done, to all concerned!
