Users to the Rescue: Microsoft Listening to Consumer FB..

Here is another take on this - stating Microsoft has overreacted and is now listening too much causing a mess in Windows 8:

[h=1]Windows 8 has ‘perhaps destroyed the most successful software franchise of all time’[/h]
...
Based on Thurrott’s report, it sounds as though Microsoft has over-learned the lessons of Windows 8 so that instead of not listening to its user base enough it’s now listening to its user base too much. Even worse, he thinks that these additions don’t really fix the biggest problem with both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 — namely, that “Windows isn’t a single OS… it’s two of them, mobile and desktop, fused together unnaturally like a Frankenstein’s monster.”
And because these dual operating systems have polarized longtime PC users, Thurrott declares that Windows 8 ”is a disaster in every sense of the word” that may even have “perhaps destroyed the most successful software franchise of all time.”

Let's be honest: Windows 8, and specifically metro, was a mistake, plain and simple.

Their goal to create a single windows on across multiple platforms was laudable, if a little ambitious. The problems was, they had to change what windows was. And, despite tifkam's ardent fans, the vast majority have rejected metro, and have done so in spectacular fashion, handing ms a very public crushing defeat. And all they managed with 8.1, was to insult the majority with their extremely lame sleight-of-hand with the start button to hell.

So here they stand, at a clear crossroads. Will they listen to the majority.., or will they listen to the ardent and vocal tifkam supporters...???

It would appear that those wanting a return of the start menu are going to have to wait for Windows 9. I don't miss it and wouldn't use it if they brought it back, so its no big deal to me. Metro works just fine for me with my keyboard and trackball. It looks to me that the changes they are making with update 1 are to cater to the non touch desktop PC users. I'm looking forward to update 1.

They don't want metro at all. They want a full return to desktop only. (I don't!)

Even my point of view is rejected by supporters.
They suggest that the start screen must have groups and live tiles for proper use. It's ridiculous!

Ok. So the majority hate it. I think the majority is not exactly a source of wisdom.

Let's be honest: Windows 8, and specifically metro, was a mistake, plain and simple.

I'm honest. Not a mistake.

IMHO the first release was poorly implemented. I was not a fan of Windows 8.0, mainly because of how Metro worked. In 8.0 it was full screen one screen only and I couldn't use Metro Snap on my 4:3 non wide screen 1280x1024 monitors. Everything installed to the main screen start screen so it got plastered with tiles pretty fast. A lot of un pinning to get just what I actually used on that screen. Now with 8.1 I can run Metro on all three monitors at once if I want. I can snap to all monitors now too, if I want. The metro screens are reversed now, installed programs and apps go to the All Apps Screen and I can pick and chose what gets pinned to the main start screen. It works well for me. I'm on board with the proposed changes too, windowed metro apps etc. The only change I'm not in favor of is the additional proposed UAC security prompts. At the moment that seems to be more of a rumor than anything else. Time will tell.

I think you do care if we have it. Even if it exists. Unless metro is gone completely for the anti group, it will continue to fester resentment and annoyance. The Store, the Cloud, Onedrive, WinRT, metro Apps are here to stay. Ignoring them, for the anti group, is like ignoring an eye sore, or a pebble in your shoe.

Perhaps and yes. Not a mistake in the sense that a new platform for launching began, different from Apple's dock. And the merging of phone apps on the pc. There has never been any release of any OS that was released without error, including 7, that has lot's of problems.

The implementation of 8 might have been rushed by Sinofsky? ...

Yea, wrong again. In fact, given how easy it is to completely ditch tifkam, even now it's existence matters naught.

My main concern is that development not end for the desktop environment, and that the desktop not disappear in the future. For the right now, tifkam's existence is less than irrelevant, to me, as I never ever have to see it.

Sigh. My fault for engaging.

Oh, be nice ... It's a friendly discussion. Are you familiar with code development trends?
I have a few issues with detractors that prefer retro tools. Or cryptic nerdy systems.
The majority seeks glassy taskbars, single click buttons, they want to edit context menus, change frame colors,
install programs that cost nothing, have triple boots, mix nt and Linux, run virtual systems, connect printers wirelessly, they want voice commands, dpi alterations, clocks, color options, perfect search for every data bit ...
The majority wants to tell others how to act, behave, what to think.

The majority says a phone os does not belong on a pc or
that metro is an unnatural linkage with tradition.

The vast majority ! yuk !

It's seems like it's not that it does not work, it seems like it's all about emotional preference.

If one was to install 300 programs, I could surely demo that semantic zooming
and start pins are quicker than rummaging thru a classic style menu.

Users rescue: ha.

Its more about intelligence and adaptability....some people would find fault in perfection.

In what way? Are you saying people who use the classic shell are more intelligent ?
What perfection? I could argue the reverse.

No one can alter usability experience results I have had by doing a compare and contrast.

I have said this before but will say it again

Desktop does not need to go away, nor should it. If it does, it will need to be replaced in some way that provides the same access.
Desktop is the Desktop and pretty much there is no substitute for it.
Why?

The desktop provides better multi-tasking capabilities. there is no doubt about that. It does.
Desktop and Task bar provide the ability to switch between software and windows quickly and cleanly.
Also, I have RainMeter that I use a dock I created and love. Had I found this in XP days, I would have been using it for years.

I like Metro Start Screen, I am not a huge fan of Metro Apps. There are some that work extremely well in that environment though.
But if everything is Metor App'd, that will not be good for MS or me at all.

I really like Win8, it's on every PC I have.
But if they take away the desktop..... I can assure you, MS will be in it's final days of being the leader in OS's.

I have Startdock DesktopX, I have installed Fences (Great Software btw), WindowBlinds (Very nice software for Win8, fixes some flaws in Color Design)
I have the Launch8 installed on my SurfacePro, Not all that useful really. I can't find a real need for that software.
It can help to clean up the startscreen a little. but, there just isn't a real need for it.
I use Classicshell for start menu and I rarely use it as a goto point.

Metro works, and it's not horrible. But the Desktop is essential.

Unless MS can provide something better, I have not seen it yet.
