    Windows 8.1

    Installation froze at Windows logo

I made the pendrive bootable using "Rufus" following the steps mentioned.

After this, I opened BIOS and disabled "Secure Boot".

Click image for larger versionClick image for larger versionClick image for larger versionClick image for larger versionClick image for larger version

Then went to Boot Menu, selected UEFI USB drive.

At the end, I got stuck at freezed "Windows logo" forever.

Can anyone please tell how to sort this issue ?

As far as I know, Rufus (by design) only allows to create a USB flash drive that's UEFI bootable ONLY or Legacy BIOS bootable ONLY, and it does not allow to create a USB flash drive that can be booted in both UEFI and Legacy BIOS mode at the same time. I think that is what is causing your hang problem.

If you want to boot and install in CSM mode, you need to set the Partition scheme and target system type in Rufus to "MBR partition scheme for BIOS or UEFI computers" which will make your USB flash drive Legacy BIOS bootable ONLY.

If you want to boot and install in native UEFI mode you need to set the Partition scheme and target system type in Rufus to either "MBR partition scheme for UEFI computer" or "GPT partition scheme for UEFI computer" which will make your USB flash drive UEFI bootable ONLY.

And make sure you set the boot mode in your UEFI firmware settings to UEFI mode or to CSM mode correspondingly -- that is UEFI mode for UEFI bootable flash drive, or CSM mode for BIOS bootable flash drive.

    I hope this helps
Doesn't help unfortunately.... I understand exactly how to use Rufus and follow Shawn's instructions in sequence perfectly.... but I keep getting the same result.... it just hangs when I try to boot from the installer.

Brand new San Disk Ultra Fit 32GB removable flash drive.... The bios in my Qosmio X70-B has a very simple boot config menu which shows only the following when it's connected. No UEFI device shows up as per the screenshot shown in the instructions.

    HDD/SSD
    USB
    ODD
    LAN

I'm going to try using a different USB flash and also trying it in another UEFI capable laptop... other than that I'll have to ditch Rufus and go with option 2 instructions and create an installer manually.

UEFI - uses GPT Partitions - Not MBR partitions

Finally, I was able to install Windows 7 side by side to Windows 8.1.

Besides setting "Secure Boot" as disabled, we need to set "Boot Mode" as Legacy Support in place of UEFI.
Then when we go to Boot options, it shows bootable pendrive in 2 options :-
    1) UEFI
    2) Simple bootable pendrive

Select the UEFI pendrive and continue.

    The issue will not come.

Once you installed Windows 7, I reset all BIOS settings back to default.

Select GPT partition, you using MBR partition when making bootable drive. That is probably the cause

Yes.... sorry I should have qualified that the screen shot was also trying to use the MBR for UEFI setting..... I tried them all.

I have a full log here which shows at the end how the flash drive has been created with GPT.... it hangs
