    Hello Mike,

It's most likely due to the key being on MS activation servers for that computer since you entered it during the first installation, and was just activated on the second install.

If you see the same as in the screenshot under step 7, then yep it's activated.

thanks guys. When I tired activating it on the first install, it failed. It would not accept the key. It does say activated now though like in the picture in step 7. I know this is off topic, but how do you get that menu you see on the bottom left in the picture in step 7 that lists desktop, search, run, etc.... I know, I have a lot I have to figure out.

I figured out the menu, right click on bottom left corner.

You're welcome Mike. Glad we could help.

That would be the WIN+X "Power Users Task Menu".

Sorry for another question on the activation. Mine does say activated. I am just concerned that it did not activate right and it will stop working in the future. I want to clarify what I did. After the first install of win 8, it installed fine, but would not accept the key. It did ask for the key during setup, but once in windows, I went to activate and it asked for key and would not accept. So I went to install win 7 (I left that out in previous post). It seemed to lock up with loading windows so I just powered down. I pulled the drive and hooked to another computer. It has 3 partitions. I was able to delete the main partition. I put it back in the computer it will run on and did not hit F12 soon enough (was reading these forums on another cpu) and win 8 repaired itself and booted. I found that weird, I guess if found the deleted partition and repaired it. I then decided to do a new install of win 8. In the win 8 setup, I deleted all three partitions on the drive and then installed win 8. during setup it asked for my key and I entered it. It then finished setup. This time, I went to see if I need to activate but it was already activated.

Again, I apologize for repeating myself, just would hate to find out in 30 days (while I am on the road) it does not want to boot).

Also, I did a UEFI install.

    thanks again,

    Mike

    No problem Mike.

It does sound like it got the needed information from the MS activation server from one of the previous install attempts. As long as it says it's activated, you are good to go.

Its strange, but i deleted a partition and installed windows 8 and like you it was activated..i think it detects a previous partition during install and says " OK yes this was an upgrade "

    Hey Shawn,

I read through your guide and it looks fantastic. I just had a quick question for ya. I read through the first few pages of this thread and the answer I was looking for wasn't clear, so I just wanted to ask you.

I installed Windows 8 64-bit on my home built box using the upgrade assistant and I upgraded from Win7 64-bit. I'm looking into getting an SSD here shortly, and your guide looks like it made it possible to do the install without installing Windows 7 first, which I am elated to see. I made a DVD copy of the Windows 8 installation when I downloaded it, and when I did the upgrade I actually just did it from my desktop and saved the DVD.

Now, if I were to follow your installation instructions, using my DVD, will the 64-bit version of the OS be installed? Does it know to install the 64-bit version based off of the specs from my old OS?

I appreciate your time you've taken in this.

    Thanks!

    -LG
