I'm using my Windows 8 ASUS EEE PC to try and connect to a wireless network. It's not available in the list.

I use my phone (Windows Mobile 6.5) and see on other people's laptops (XP, Vista, 7) that it's available and those devices can see the network and connect without problem.

I've tried to manually add the network with no success.

I've tried to check the routers settings to see what level it's broadcasting on but that should just be average b/g but I can't check for sure, because I don't have the password for the router.

I don't believe there are any special settings as the router is set up to cater for standard users.
Why can my machine not see it?

Ive had no such problem in the past with any other wireless network.

Windows 8 does not see the wireless network. Switch to Ubuntu and it sees it no problem. Also, using Windows 7, I can see the network.

I can only suggest to install the WLAN drivers in Windows 7 compatibility mode. The link below shows you how. :)
