Solved Windows.old I cant delete it

Ok, sorry I was referring to manually changing the ownership and permissions using OPTION THREE below instead of using the "Take Ownership" context menu though.

Alex, you can't delete it without wrecking up the operating system. Using different suggestions from this forum, I managed to delete much of it, but then I had to re-install the Consumer Edition. Leave it alone.

I had no problems getting rid of windows.old using Disk Cleanup on this 64-bit upgrade.

However, it dumped another folder on my C:\ drive, as it usually does.

This file, usually easily deleted, refused to leave no matter what.

So, I downloaded a registry hack called 'Take Ownership', the link is on this site somewhere but I can't recall where.

It puts a 'Take Ownership' option into the right-click menu.

Two clicks, the unwanted folder was toast!

There are some unusual permission issues with win8 - most users won't notice.

After I wrecked everything up trying to delete windows.old, I re-installed, and it works fine.

Alex, your friend might have done what I did. He might have re-installed Win 8, and that got rid of it.

Worked for me, anyway.

The solution is to browse to "computer", right click on the OS drive, click properties, click disk cleanup, click clean up system files and then check the box next to old windows install and click ok. It will completely and safely remove windows.old

I had a similar issue. What solved it for me is resetting the owner on the folder. For some reason the ACL gets messed up which prevents the removal. For instance, it may refer to a non-existent, or orphaned user account.

Let's assume that the folder I'm having trouble removing is located at "D:\Windows.old".

Run the following two commands (one after another) as a built-in administrator:

takeown /f "D:\Windows.old" /r

cacls "D:\Windows.old" /T /G administrator:F

This will reset ownership on that folder to the administrator. (May take some time if folder contains many other files.) After that simply delete it from Windows Explorer again as a built-in administrator.
