My Windows Defender was running even a week ago!
Yesterday, I noticed a red cross on my action center.

It opens up the Windows Defender (at risk state), and after a minute, it shows this 0x800106ba error.

I tried several procedures from Microsoft Helpdesk, but none of it actually helped! Is anyone here who can help me to fix it!

Hi,
Do You Have any third party antivirus there?if not then update widows defender and check for windows update even the optional ones.

In addition to Arpan's suggestion, please make sure your Windows installation is still activated as that error can be indicative of an expired license as well.

I do not have any other antivirus. I tried updating Windows and there was 1 important update available: Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB2267602 (Definition 1.169.1323.0) : 3.6 MB. I tried installing it, and it failed with Error Code 800700005! I'm set to auto update!

Hello,

Since I haven't encountered this same issue, so I searched for the error code. I found this:
Fix: Windows Defender Error Code 0x800106ba Application failed to initialize

Have you tried the above fix?

I tried that, but went into an error on trying "regsvr32 initpki.dll" (I did it on Command Prompt (Admin)). Plus, I had to change a few names from the list, like "regsvr32 wucltui.dll" > "regsvr32 wucltux.dll".

I don't think my activation will expire. I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro!

That information would have been very useful if included in your first post. Anyway, try this:

How do I reset Windows Update components?

If you tried that already run sfc /scannow (from an elevated command prompt) to see if it finds any errors.

I ran sfc /scannow and it completed with an error. It says "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log...."

Now run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and, if all errors are corrected, test Defender again.

I did "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" and it completed successfully. But it didn't fix the Defender.
