Windows 8 x64 - Two Control Panel icons in Taskbar..?!

Since I installed Windows 8 (on top of Vista x64 Ultimate) I have two Control Panel icons in the Taskbar.

If I right click and choose Delete to the one on the left, nothing happens.

If I right click and choose Delete to the one on the right, it deletes, but it reappears after a Reboot.

This is driving me nuts. I only want one icon.

How can I achieve this?

Thanks.

D.

Thanks for the reply. I don't think that the link you provided can help me. But, I should have been more explicit with my question!

I have no problem adding or removing Apps from the Taskbar.

But, on the bottom right of the screen, on the Taskbar, is an item marked Desktop. If I drag this to the left, I see the following items: Libraries, Me, Computer, Network, Control Panel, Recycle Bin, Control Panel.

That's my problem. For some reason there are two Control Panels listed. If I right click/Delete the first one, nothing happens. If I right click/delete the second one, it disappears, but reappears after a reboot.

How can I remove this second one permanently?

Many thanks.

If I understand this correctly, you are accessing the desktop toolbar via the taskbar. There are apparently two control panel icon/shortcuts located on your actual desktop. I think you need to delete/move one of them off of your desktop.

kcmike, You were right. There wasn't just two but three(!) Control Panel icons on my Desktop (by which I mean pressing the Windows button and seeing them on the screen as Apps). They were called Control Panel, Control Panel (2) and Control Panel (3). I unpinned (2) and (3) from the Desktop. I then clicked on 'Desktop' on the screen - to return to the blank screen with the Taskbar active. Unfortunately, I still had two Control Panel icons in the Desktop/Taskbar location.

I deleted the one that will allow me to delete it and rebooted, but it's there again in the Taskbar - though there is only one Control Panel on the Desktop now.

This is really weird!

Any other ideas?

Many thanks.

Have you tried going in the actual Desktop folder in File explorer/manager which is located inside your user folder? Maybe you can get rid of them that way.

Move your cursor/pointer to the lower left corner of your screen until the thumbnail of the start screen pops up and then <right-click> and a menu will pop up. Click on file explorer and you should see your hard drives listed. Just double-click on the drive your OS is on it should be in Local disk/Users/Your Username/Desktop.

Ahah! I had already tried that.

The Desktop folders in C:/Me and C:/Me Administrator are both empty. So, no joy there, I'm afraid.

???

Thanks.

I have exactly the same problem.
Two control panels in the taskbar, I can delete the right one, but it reappears every time I start my computer:

I have deleted all control panels in the desktop, I have tried to remove the desktop from the taskbar and put it back again.
But there is always the double control panel.:sarc:
