Well, the reason i'm posting is because, when i don't use Windows 8 for about 20 minutes, it literally locks up and even though i can see the screen, the key board and mouse are functionless.

And all the while i thought it was my KVM switch, and so i disconnected the KVM mouse and keyboard, but continued using the screen KVM switch and that's when i realized, its not a KVM switch problem, its a Windows 8 problem or Windows 8 setting.

Any ideas anyone?
Thanks very much and the positive waves is, i don't have to buy a new KVM switch! yeah baby!

Hi bobk544, welcome to EightForums.

For this issue I'd like to start with using System File Checker to ensure the system doesn't have any corrupted files.

Open an elevated command prompt by pressing :winkey: + X > select command prompt (Admin)

Type: SFC /scannow then press enter. Once the process has completed take note of the message received.

Next, follow the guide below..

Ok thanks etech, i will give the Windows X a try the next time it happens, thanks very much for the pointers!

no.he wants you to do it before the lockup ,to try and solve the lockup problem

I use a kvm switch also ,and mine will freezes up sometime when I put a usb stick in the front case slot .
kvm switches are problematic

Ok here's what i got when i ran that command:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.3.9600]

sfc /VERIFYONLY

C:\WINDOWS\system32)

Ok i'm running it again, i think i missed the part about running it twice, so its running now, thanks for letting me know, will be back shortly!

You typed the command wrong. Their is no space between / and scannow.

The output should look something like this..

error 5.png

Error8.png

Ok here's what i got from this SFC /scannow command:
SFC /scannow
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.3.9600]
(c) 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>SFC /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some
of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
supported in offline servicing scenarios.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>

and tried to open the CBS.log file, but the system can't seem to open it

thanks again for your time!

Download the attached file. Right click the file and select Run as Administrator.

This will create a folder called Logs on the Desktop. Right click the Logs folder and select Send To > Compressed Folder.

Attach the Folder to your next post.

How to attach files:

Click Go Advanced
Click Manage Attachments
Click Browse
Click Upload

Ok i'm now looking at the log, made a copy of the file, so i will get back within the hour, its now 3:44pm eastern time

Ok here is that compressed Log file, please see the attachment!

thanks again for your valuable time!

Excellent, I will review the log files. In the meantime I suggest running chkdsk to ensure the file system is in good shape.

How to run chkdsk:

Open an elevated command prompt > Type: chkdsk /R > you will be prompted to run the scan at startup Press Y > then Enter.

Restart your computer, allow the scan to run completely. It may take some time so be patient.

Chkdsk is only 10% done after hours

Hello, the chkdsk is still running and only 10% done, is there anyway to bail out of that chkdsk and basically, i set it to run the chkdsk after rebooting, but i can't seem to bail out of that operation!

thanks for any suggestions!

Their is no safe way to bail out of chkdsk. It's important to let the program finish its work. If you for some reason decide to power off the computer it may render your system unbootable. Please allow it some time to finish, this step needs to be done at some point anyways.

ok will do and fyi it got to 10% pretty quick but has just been stuck at 10% for about 3 hours or so, does that sound right?

Repairing damaged sectors can take a long time. So, yes that sounds completely normal. If you allow the computer to sit and the program hasn't made any progress after about 8 hours the only option would be to force the computer to shutdown. Although the results can be disastrous. However, from experience I can tell you disastrous results are a rare occasion.

ok great, that chkdsk has completed, left it running thru the night! thanks again for your advise on that!
